Day Trip to Chico

My friend, Bev’s, youngest child, ‘E’, was serving as a camp counselor for a YWAM (Youth with a Mission) camp near Chico, CA.  She wanted to visit her, and since I had never been and love to explore, we decided to go on a day trip to Chico!

This is the YWAM camp, called ‘Richardson Springs’.  It used to be an upscale hotel, situated on hot springs, and people would go there to sit and soak.

Playing in an old telephone booth with a real live telephone!

Awesome display over the fireplace…

Bev joined ‘E’ while she was doing an activity with her kids…

Incredible ‘E’.  I want to be her when I grow up…

One of the nasty smelling warm springs that is obviously no longer being taken care of…

Picking blackberries with Bev…

Hiking to a waterfall…

Found it!

Back at the property…

We drove into the town of Chico and while shopping, I asked the retail clerk what we should see while in Chico with kids.  She steered us to this cute toy/clothing/ stationary/etc. store.  In the back is a yo-yo shop/yo-yo museum.  This clerk is a master yo-yo competing artist, with his own playing/trading card, and video!  He was great with the boys and talked with them while I shopped.

The world’s largest yo-yo.  We saw pictures of this going off the Golden Gate Bridge!  They use a crane for it…

A late lunch at ‘Madison Bear Garden’…the place apparently gets pretty crazy at night when college is in session, but during the day in the summer…no problem…

yes…those are shoes on the antlers…

yes, that’s a wagon on the ceiling…

On the trip back, we saw a sign for  ‘Alligator Jerky’.  We have a standing joke with our friends, the Smiths, and just had to get some ‘gator’.  It’s actually quite yummy!  The boys loved it, too!

We surprised the boys by taking them to the Cal State Fair.  (This in and of itself is not a surprise; Cal State Fair is a client of DH’s and we get passes every year…)

...the big surprise was that we went on an evening that celebrity skateboarder, Tony Hawk, and other pros were putting on an exhibition!

We arrived plenty early so the boys could have front row viewing…

Tony Hawk, waving..

Tony did an amazing show with flips, etc.  He ended a little earlier than the rest and we found out later from one of the Fair officials that he was performing with cracked ribs!  The boys were thrilled to get to ‘hi-5’ him when he was leaving.  i was too far away to catch the shot.

I can’t track down this kid’s name, but he is 15 and an amazing skateboarder. If he hasn’t gone pro yet, it’s just a matter of time…

Another pro whose name escapes me…

After the show, ‘A’ said, “mom, this is the best summer ever.  I got to see Toby Mac and Tony Hawk all in the same summer!”

Continuing their quest for moolah, didge, dinero, cashola…my friend, Bev, paid the boys to wash her car inside and out….

Ka-ching!!

Sunflowers!

I love fresh flowers.  A sweet friend gave these to freshen up our table.

Earning Their Keep

The boys have been on me about earning money.  They have a weekly allowance for their regular duties, but they wanted more.  So, I made a big list of things they could do extra for extra pay.  The chores ranged from $1 – $5, depending on the depth of the task.  These are to be done during their free time.

‘A’ vacuumed the first floor…

‘R’ scrubbed the toilets!

This was the nastiest of projects….scrubbing out the outdoor garbage cans.  The boys did ours and one of our neighbors.  Ours even had maggots in it.  BARF!!  Anyway, they did such a great job.  The neighbors were thrilled and paid them, even though I had planned on it.

Fishing off the dock…

Uncle Devin, jumping in with the boys!  I love this picture…

The boys swam to the buoy with KK and Uncle Devin.  They are growing up so fast…

P and K taught the boys how to do cartwheels!

My awesome niece, P, wakeboarding…

Cousins innertubing!   Boo yeah!

Pretty, pretty 🙂

Getting crazy!!

Sibling time.  May I never be too old…

Lovely cousin Jenna and little ‘R’

Big boy, ‘H’

George and Martha…

Uncle Sam and Abe…

I AM CHERRY BLOSSOMS

This was hilarious!  Charles was acting as a Secret Service man.  A boat was slowly going by and he walked with “George and Martha” on to the dock and said, “excuse me  folks, I need you to move back 75 feet away from the President”.  Needless to say, they are a little confused, but we all got a kick out of it.

Day Trip to Stehekin

Every 4th of July, we visit our uncle and aunt’s property at Lake Chelan.  This year, we came a couple days early to join them for a day trip to the remote little town of Stehekin.

Lake Chelan is a long, 55-mile, narrow lake.  It is the largest natural lake in Washington; it is also the 3rd deepest lake in the USA.  At the south end of the lake is a town called Chelan.  This is a popular vacation town, with lake resorts, shopping, and water activities.  Roads heading uplake on both sides end about  25 miles.  At the northernmost tip of Lake Chelan is the town of Stehekin (population 75, although it increases seasonally in the summer).  The only way you can reach it is by seaplane or boat.  Along the way are waterfalls, camping spots, and some remote private properties.

We left our place early for a lovely boat ride.  Here is a picture of the boys patiently waiting to board the boat.

Sometimes, the water can become too choppy for little speedboats to navigate uplake.  Not this time.  The water was PERFECT!  And we had the lake practically to ourselves!!

We took a short break at a campground.  Check out this campsite.  Idyllic?

We saw a variety of animals along the way.  It was almost surreal.  People that live here say they have seen one set of the animals, but not all that we saw on this single trip.  It truly was a gift!

We saw a llama, then a couple of deer, and then…mountain goats!

Arriving….

The Ministry of Silly Walks…

Renting bikes…

…and riding along a lovely road to a bakery…

Church.

The most picture-perfect cabin ever.  Located where the lake meets a river.  Contains a potting shed to the left, the garage on the right, and a large deck, and covered porch.

After fortifying ourselves with cinnamon rolls, we continued to ride our bikes along the road and stopped at the old Stehekin school.  They no longer use it for school, and the doors are left unlocked for people to visit.

This picture does not show the detail, but this is a map of Africa from 1916.  Most of the countries have different names.

‘A’ teaching class…

Auntie’s turn…

Went on to Rainbow Falls.  The falls were intense and we were drenched in seconds!

Continuing on to an old orchard homestead…

We decided to do a little trail riding and followed some cross country and snowshoe trails.  It was a fun little detour…

DH found an old Root Beer can that was a solid tin or aluminum and required a can opener to open it.

On the ride back, we stopped at the bakery again and picked up some pie.  Then, my aunt and I stopped at  The Garden and had a nice talk with the owner/gardener.  We bought some of his homemade goat cheese.  I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he was the original owner of the Honeybear Bakery, a place DH and I enjoyed going to when we lived in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle.  Apparently, he sold it and it is now in Lake Forest Park.

Bees are kept up high for two reasons.  To keep the bears at bay and to keep the hives above the snow banks in the winter…

More pretty views heading back to the boat…

The trip home…

Look at what we saw!  Incredible!!

Two tuckered out boys!

Deer.

A little vacation…um… castle.  It’s for sale 🙂

Another awesome encounter with nature.  Big horn sheep!!

Back in civilization, we saw the boat ‘The Innamorata’, a 56 ft. Chris Craft that was once owned by Dean Martin.  It was used for a while for dinner cruises on the lake.  Now, it just sits on the lake and gets moved every once in a while.  It is falling into disrepair and the cost to fix it outweighs the value of the boat.  So it sits.

A fantastic bonus was running across two families from our church family in North Bend while they were boating.  It was fun to yell ‘hi’ between our boats.

An incredible, blessed day.  One we will always treasure.

Another wonderful visit with the Grandparents.  Gentle, sunny weather made for lovely country walks.  Quiet, serene, special.

Goofs.

Randy and Margaret have a few birdhouses in their yard.  This one had at least three little babes inside…

From the garden!

Playing with Luke!

Cousin Terry Visits

My cousin Terry came down for a couple of nights.  It is always such a joy to have him here. He grilled up an incredible dinner for us one night and we had quite the pool party.

We hiked Hidden Falls and found a fabulous swimming hole!

DH received an ‘artist endorsement’ from Martin guitars and was able to get an amazing price on this precious little bundle.  It sounds incredible and is a nice addition to the family. 🙂
