Thanksgiving Entry

I have recently discovered Pinterest.  It has been great for inspiration in the home, kitchen, and ideas for the kids.  It can also be a big “time suck” if I’m not careful.  I saw a picture that had the doorway decorated with corn husks and a bunch of flower pots in Autumn colors.

Inspired, I bought some flowers, with the intent to decorate the doorway.  However, whatever I tried, nothing looked good. So, I came up with this… I never decorate; it’s not a strength.  But, I am pretty content with how our courtyard looks…

OK, anyone reading this?  If yes, here’s a five minute challenge.  Organize your junk drawer!

I purchased a desk organizer, but it sat in a closet for over a year.  Looking at the pit that had become the junk drawer, I recalled the organizer…

BEFORE…

Ready? Begin! Five minutes!!

Take everything out and put it on the counter….toss everything that needs tossing….set aside items that need to go elsewhere…place organizer…return items in their allotted location…five minutes…done!

Clean Eating Oatmeal

Colder mornings equal hot oatmeal breakfasts in our family.  In the past, our oatmeal would be smothered in brown sugar, milk, raisins, and maybe nuts or chopped apple.

I learned that maple syrup can be a good and clean substitute for brown sugar, (real maple syrup, not pancake syrup).  Did you know the brown sugar is actually white sugar and molasses?  I never really thought about it…

So, I topped our oatmeal with maple syrup, bananas, and almond milk.  The maple syrup was delicious and  none of us felt like we were “settling” on flavor.  I just have to reconcile the cost difference…

The next time I will make oatmeal, I plan on creating an oatmeal topping bin, with dried fruit and nuts for variety.

Heading toward the Iao Valley, there is a tropical garden that you pay to walk the grounds.  They have the most incredible flowers, trees, and plants.  I always have the hardest time trying to figure out which pictures to post.

More rainbows…

Waiting out a flash rain storm…we were walking along the boardwalk.  This is the Honua Kai property…

A makeshift umbrella…

‘R’ collected flowers for me wherever we went.  Here is our little bouquet from one of the walks…

Another rainbow.  It’s a double!!

For our last night, we surprised the boys with a luau…

We thoroughly enjoyed the Royal Lahaina Luau.  David and I went to this about 13 years ago.  We think it was the same master of ceremonies.  The boys loved the fire dancers.  It rained a little while we were waiting for the event to begin.  They handed out ponchos.  But, the sky cleared and a full moon was out.  It was a great night.

The last rainbow on our last day…

Before heading to the airport, we stopped at Ho’okipa to watch the kitesurfers and surfers…

My friend, Kelly, crocheted these cute luggage markers for the boys…

The End!

Maui 2011 – Part 2

If you were to ask what is are the three things you want to do on this vacation, the boys would say:

1. “Dress in our costumes and act out our characters on the beach…”

2. Drink out of a real coconut…

3. Go to a luau.

As we were driving to our bodysurf beach, we saw a roadside stand that sold coconuts!  The coconut lady hacked open a coconut, (it’s a lot of work!!), and we all enjoyed the refreshing coconut water and meat…

Overlooking Honolua Bay, an amazing spot for snorkeling.  You hike about a quarter mile through gorgeous rainforest jungle  to get to the rocky beach.  Or, you can pay for a boat to take you there…we hiked in, and wouldn’t have it any other way!!

We decided to drive around the west side of Maui, something we do every year.  the road narrows to a one lane, winding road.  This year, there were many more cars than in the past.  It was pretty stressful at times.  I think this drive is out of our system for a while.  I will miss, however, our yearly visit to Lorraine’s Shaved Ice, in the tiny village Kahakuloa. Lorraine runs a small business out of her garage, selling homemade banana bread and banana cream pie,  made from bananas in her yard.  She also sells shaved ice, and handmade quilts.  I found a little video that a customer made of her…

Lorraine always greets us warmly, and guides the boys to the backyard, so they can play with her “weeds”, some kind of ground plant whose leaves close up when you touch them.  She also always asks if they remember her “alligator rock”, a rock formation on the side of a cliff that resembles an alligator head…
Lorraine’s banana tree…

Lorraine, showing ‘R’ her “weeds”…

Overlooking Kahakuloa…

The flower collector…

Wrapping around to the north part of the island, we headed for lunch at the Saigon Cafe, another spot we always try to go to every year…
‘A’ asked for a fork…

I think I will end for now, and start another post…

Maui – 2012 Part 1

Our original plan was to go the first week in December…calling to make reservations mid-October seemed reasonable…I never thought the property would be sold out that week!  And not only that week, but the whole month of December!  And not only, the whole month of December but the last three weeks in November as well!  And not only that, but all three Hawaii properties were in the same situation!

Our only options were to go to Steamboat Springs on the dates we wanted originally, or go to Maui on November 1st.  It took about half a second to figure that one out.  With some additional negotiating, we were able to piecemeal additional nights on and ended up staying for 12 nights!  It happened so quickly, I wasn’t psychologically ready to go on vacation. You know, that anticipation that builds prior to the vacation date?

The timing turned out to be a blessing!  We were just finishing the busiest month of the year at work and the down time was appreciated.  We all were able to transition to relaxation quickly, (sometimes this takes a while…).

Our days were simple and repetitive… wake up, make breakfast, go snorkeling or bodysurfing, go back to the room for a shower and lunch, go back to the ocean for more snorkeling or boydysurfing, another shower, then dinner in the room or eat out, watch a video, read aloud before bed, then goodnight…

We are so blessed (and spoiled) to have an incredible snorkeling spot in front of our property.  It is the equivalent to swimming in a salt water aquarium.  Not only did we see a huge variety of gorgeous tropical fish, we also saw eels, octopi, and sea turtles.  At Mokuleia Bay, (where we bodysurf), we saw a group of spinner dolphins, putting on the most incredible show!  I saw on do a double flip!

The boys and I at the Sacramento airport…

The view from our room…

We arrived October 30th…this meant Halloween on the island!  As soon as the boys heard we’d be on Maui for Halloween, ‘A’ jumped up an shrieked, “now, I can walk up and down the beach in my Jack Sparrow costume and sing, “Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate’s life for me, and Dad, you can film me!”
Then, ‘R’ piped in and said, “Yeah, then I can jump out and attack you as a ninja!”  Such is our life with boys…

Waiting at the elevator to (gently) scare whoever was on the other side.  Totally bummed no one was there…

Ninja!  (Mommy made a bad choice in picking waterproof eyeliner for the boys eye makeup. It irritated poor ‘R’s eyes and was impossible to remove, (I had no remover).  They had the makeup on for quite a few days after…)

Jack Sparrow, character from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’…in front of a kids pirate ship on our property…

DH and I were not looking forward to the whole trick or treating thing.  We had already spent many hours snorkeling in the day and half we had been there and were tired.  Happy to have the well timed downpour that made it easy for us to say, “oh, too bad!  It’s raining!  Let’s buy some candy at the market downstairs and watch a video instead…”  The boys were fine with it, (I think they were a little tired, too…)  Here is the first of many rainbows we saw.  This occurred just before the downpour started…

‘R’ fell asleep with a lollipop in his mouth!

A morning spent bodysurfing in Napili Bay…these were smaller waves to prepare the boys for the larger ones at Mokuleia.  This is ‘R’s favorite beach.

Waiting for the sunblock to dry…

Let the bodysurfing commence!

While at Napili, there is a “must go” place for breakfast or lunch, The Gazebo restaurant… the boys eat the macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup, and David and I love the fried rice plate.  The plates are large enough to share or take home for leftovers…

Our nature baby.  Always collecting items…

I Love This Rose.

This is a rose in our front yard.  I don’t know what it’s called, but I love it!

The Ugly Mug

Breakfast at The Ugly Mug is always a treat for our family.  Double bonus when we were seated at a table that had two Hawaii themed coffee mugs!

I took the boys to watch the inauguration of WJU’s President, John Jackson.  Dr. Jackson was one of our pastors at Bayside and has become President  of WJU.

The boys are a little young to fully understand the significance of this day.  This incredible university will mostly likely be the place our boys will attend, unless God leads them elsewhere.  I spent most of the inauguration forcing back tears of gratitude and joy, witnessing the amazing pastors and professors speaking words of Truth to those in attendance.

OH, I AM SO EXCITED!  It looks like they posted the entire inauguration video.  Totally worth watching!!

Yum!  Cupcakes at the reception!

The boys and I took a tour of campus.  ‘R’ is excited that they are building a pizza oven in the dining hall.  Priorities.
