We have a morning routine…a part of the morning routine includes the boys unloading the dishwasher.  You should have heard all the things running through my brain after hearing ‘R’ say, “Mom, can you help me undo this?”

(In my head…)

Denial… “This is not my child.”

Anger… “Are you serious?”  “We covered knife safety!  Bad choice!!”

Bargaining…  “You refrain from doing that again, and I will let you live.”

Depression… “I suck at this mom thing.”

Acceptance…  I will help you after I get the camera…”

Dinner with Friends

My husband left for a men’s retreat.  I invited my friend, Tina, and her kids, to dinner, because her husband was at the same retreat.

We made yummy pita pizzas (make individual pizzas using pita bread as the crust), and the crazy kids decided to go for a swim, even though it was chilly.  We had a great night of fun and laughter.

Upon checking my email one morning, I read that my good friend, Linda, and her family, were driving down to California.  We were able to spend a day together!  They came to our place.  The intent was to go to a park, but it was raining, so we stayed inside and played.  After a while, though, we headed out for gelato…

This is Tonia.  She is a family friend of the Mills, and joined them on the road trip.  Here she is holding C5…

C3 and C4…

Daddy David and C4…

Mama Linda and me…

I took them to our church and the kids played in the playground…

It was such a blessing to spend time with this special family!

The Tadpole Drama

It all started around “R”s birthday.  He had received some birthday money and bought a Star Wars Science tadpole/frog habitat.  We thought it would be neat to watch the tadpoles transition to frogs.  We bought the habitat and eagerly sent away for two tadpoles.  They said it would take about six weeks, and that is how long it took!

Every day, the boys would accompany me to the mailbox to see if the tadpoles came.  It was brutal for them when my birthday came late April, and I was receiving presents in the mail.

Finally, FINALLY, the tadpoles came!  We had studied all about how to care for them and what to expect.  The boys had names picked out for a long time: ‘Luke Skywalker – XWing Pilot’, and ‘Luke Skywalker – Jedi Knight’.  They were soooooo excited!!

Two days later, ‘R’ comes running into our bedroom, crying, and said that the tadpoles were dead.  I went into the room, expecting them to be belly up, but was saddened to discover that the cat had dumped the habitat onto the floor and the two tadpoles were laying lifeless on the carpet.  Both boys were very upset and crying, and I was hugging them and telling them how sad and sorry I felt.  I placed the tadpoles on a paper towel and before throwing them out, I decided to place them in water, just in case.

Low and behold, they were both still ALIVE!!  We continued on with our day, but upon returning home, we discovered they had both died.  Still, this reprieve had lessened the trauma.

We have decided to hold off on any other little critters…

Just wanted to let everyone know that Homeschoolblogger is migrating to an entirely new system.  It will be a while for me before everything on track.  Wanted to make sure you knew what was going onsince everything looks so different…

After delivering the baskets, I took the boys to Cain’s Crossing Renaissance Faire.  A friend of mine found out that homeschool kids get in for free if you get a voucher ahead of time.  They gave us a passport that had questions the kids were to ask at various stations.  It was incredible educational; one of the most educational faires I have ever attended.

I was amazed at the volume and quality of the costumes, and after spending five hours there, the kids were still begging me to stay!

I did not let anyone know we would be there, and were pleasantly suprised to run into our friends, the McGuire family…

Gardner/Vassallo family…

…and the Clark family!

A couple of faeries handing out wishes…

One of many processionals…

God save the Queen!!

Sword fights…

Teaching the boys how to tie a square knot…

The art of medieval medicine…

Singing for the Queen…

This lovely woman taught the boys all about the various trades they could choose to apprentice for around the age of 12…then a journeyman…then a master…

This kind blacksmith taught ‘R’ how to twist the iron into a spoon that we got to keep as a souvenir!

As we were walking past a group of people, someone asked us if we wanted to play a game.  They boys said ‘yes’, so I said ‘yes’.  Then, they assigned me team captain and wrote the number 10 on my hand (I still did not know what we were doing!)  When I found out that it was a scavenger hunt and that we had 30 minutes to collect the items, I was tempted to back out, but they had added people to “my” team.

The rules:
-Do not mark the list in any way
-Do not tear up the list in any way
-No use of cell phones to retrieve information
-You can beg, borrow, barter, but not steal, to obtain an item.

There were 10 teams.  One big challenge to the list was that we did not know what many of the items were!  We had to go up to random people and ask if they knew what an item was.  I went up to those dressed as noblemen and women.

I have to say, I had a fabulous team!  I had two moms who were competitive, three teen girls, 3 pre-teens, and about 5 kids.  Everyone was totally into it, and that made it all the more fun.  We divided the group into three smaller teams, and divvied up the items.

Here is the list…

1. 3 conifer lancettes.  I am happy to say that I was able to figure this out  on my own without help…pine needles!

2. Pirate Swag Silver/Gold/Bejeweled.    The teen girls and a few kids collected some trinkets.

3.  Live Flying Bug.  A preteen girl had collected a gnat right off the bat, but she lost it.  She was able to catch a dragonfly, though!

4.   A comfit.  We had to ask around for the definition of this one.  It is a sweet; a treat to eat.  We were given some shortbread cookies as our comfit.

5.  Palindrome.  One of the moms knew the definition to this.  It is a word that is the same forwards and backwards.  We asked around and came up with ‘refer’, and ‘bob’, but the best one we retrieved was: “Rats Live On No Evil Star”.6.  Spyglass.    I borrowed a spyglass from a noblewoman.  She actually had one in her basket.  It was more like a magnifying glass, though, so we only got a half point for it, because it did not extend like a regular spyglass.

7.  Prize from another game.  This was brilliant!  The teen girls had played a game earlier and their prize was a hug from a man.  So, they tracked the man down and had him join us.  He was the “prize”.

8.  Quaff and Eructation.  We had to ask around quite a bit for this one.  We learned that a quaff is a mug, and and eructation is a belch!  I borrowed a quaff from a noblewoman.  Many of the kids were happy to provide the eructation…

Checking/judging our list…

The remaining items were actually activities that they judged us on…

9.  Grandest Gruning.   We picked one person (one of the pre-teen boys) to stand before the crowd, cover his face with his hands, then remove his hands and show the funniest face his can make.  We did not win this.

10.  Fastest Cracker Whistled.  We picked one person (another pre-teen boy), who ate two crackers and had to be the first person to whistle.  HE WON!  He’s the little cutie in the black…

11.  Most Diabolical Laugh.  We picked one of the other moms to laugh.  We did not have time to listen to laughs, but she said she had a good one.  She did.  SHE WON!12.  Best Sea Creature Impersonation.  We decided it would be a good idea to make it a team effort, so we took four of the older girls and had them create an octopus.  Up to this point, the activities were performed beginning with team 1 and working all the way to team 10.  But, they threw us a curveball and said we not only had to use all the members on the team, but also start with our team 10!  So, we quickly changed our creature into a jellyfish and got everyone involved by linking arms and kicking out.  We did not win this one, and one of the moms was wanting to protest this because our group was so large, but I wanted to wait.  I knew we were doing well, and it just wasn’t worth creating that kind of tension.

So, after tallying up the points, we learned that two teams had forfeited (they were no shows), and out of the remaining 8 teams, WE WON!!  WOO HOO!!  Our team, minus one girl…

A little bit of archery…

A little bit of fencing…

Drooling over the swords and shields…

Mark my words…this will be an annual event for our family.  We might even break down and invest in some costumes, if I can sweet talk our Lord of the Manor into it!:)

Our church has a neat ministry that delivers gift baskets people donate to  moms living in low income housing, shelters, or were nominated to receive a basket.

Our Bible study built a basket, and the boys and I spent this morning delivering baskets to 10 moms, all living in the same housing complex.  We enjoyed meeting them and their children.  The moms were genuinely appreciative.

The complex we delivered to is called Serna Village.  I was very impressed with the cleanliness and organization of the grounds, and the safe space for the kids to play.

Heidi and Lisa flew down from WA to have some fun with me!  They arrived Friday, late afternoon, and I took them to see our church.  Bayside Granite Bay  was hosting both the Dead Sea Scrolls and an event called, ‘Thrive’.  The place was packed!  We were able to get into the sanctuary for a few minutes before Thrive resumed with their evening sessions.

Per Heidi’s request, we had dinner at Chick-Fil-A, (if you have been to a Chick-Fil-A, and you know that WA state does not have them, you understand the reasoning behind this request.)  After that, we went to the Fountains for some gelato at Miabella!  It was a nice night to enjoy our dessert by the fountain…

Saturday, we left bright and early for Napa Valley.  First stop…Domaine Chandon.  We sat on the terrace and toasted Lisa and a new beginning with her beloved, Dave, and their engagement!  (Gorgeous ring, BTW, nice job, Dave!!)

Next stop… Clos Pegase.  This was a new place for me, and I am so glad we went!  It is up in Calistoga, and away from the congestion of the weekend crowd.  This property is saturated with incredible sculptures and art throughout.  It had a different feel from other properties.  A side note: this property offers a free tour twice a day.  We did not attend it, but thought it would be nice to mention, since most of Napa charges for everything…

These picnic tables were next to the fountain above.  Can you imagine spending an afternoon here??

In the distance, you can see Lisa walking from the entrance (and having just changed into a lovely sundress), toward the tasting room…

There is a side room off the the tasting room that has original art from an artist in residence…

The tasting room was made all the more delightful by the fabulous staff.  Cher, an employee for 13 years, was friendly and charming, and obviously loved her job.  We walked away feeling like we had made a new friend.  She made me want to go out of my way to visit this winery again, regardless of where else I might be in Napa Valley.

As we were leaving, we noticed that the artist was painting, using the same colors in Lisa’s dress!

Next stop…Charles Krug.  We bought tickets for a special wine tasting, sponsored by the St. Helena Appellation.  There were about 30 wineries present, and appetizers were made by celebrity chef, Cindy Pawlcyn, owner of three top rated Napa restaurants.

The woman in the white top is Cindy Pawlcyn.  I did not want to be too obvious in taking her picture.  She is talking to Heidi.  I got to talk with her a bit as well.  She is very down to earth and friendly.

Next stop…our hotel, the Lodge at Calistoga.  They call themselves a boutique hotel.  I would not go that far, but I would say they are a decent “motel-ish” hotel.  Lisa and I laid by the pool for a while, before getting ready for dinner.

Side note:  I just had to interject here to say that I received a fabulous birthday gift from my friend, Jen Glover.  She made me this tote.  The detail is incredible, and there are even two interior pockets.  Thanks to you, Jen,  for your love and talent in making this.  I will cherish it always.  Props to Heidi for being a fine mule…

Dinner was at the Mexican restaurant, Pacifico, in Calistoga.  All I can say is, ‘eh’, regarding the food.  I liked the server, though.  We walked Calistoga’s corridor and stopped to listed to some beautiful live guitar playing at the Calistoga Inn.  This property has a beautiful patio that, combined with the strings of lights, fountain, candles, dessert, coffee, and music, made for a delightful end to our day.

Sunday…
After an, eh…, continental breakfast at the property, we headed out to make the most of our last day.  Our first stop was Bennett Lane winery.  This was not on my original list to attend, but it was one that was recommended by Cher at Clos Pegase.  I am so glad we came here.  It is a small winery, off the main path, and I thoroughly enjoyed their wines.  I am thinking of becoming a wine club member of theirs…

They have what I think is one of the most beautiful views of the valley vineyards.  They also have this sweet side/backyard that is not permitted for weddings!  Too bad, because it really is an ideal spot for a small wedding.

Napa Valley has identical signs when coming in from either direction…

Next stop…Castello di Amorosa!  This property is one that my boys often ask when can we return.  This is always a fun place to bring friends who have never been.  Somewhere I read that it’s a Disneyland for adults.  Slight stretch, but enjoyable nonetheless.

We couldn’t resist…this is the confessional in the chapel…by the way, they have a Latin service there on Sundays.  Next time…

It was lunch time, and a picnic lunch sounded perfect.  We moved on to Beringer winery, around since 1876, and broke into our picnic tote that I packed back at home.  (Tip: If you want to purchase picnic items in Napa, you need to shop early in the day, otherwise, you will be waiting forever  in line with the rest of the Napa Valley weekenders).

Beringer has a beautiful garden and picnic grounds, and on this day, they even had live music!

Final stop…sparkling wine at Domaine Carneros.  The ideal ending to a special weekend…

Salud!

Art: Sculpture

For this lesson, we learned about the Romans and their sculptures.  The boys decided to make dragons…

A Special Birthday

It was my birthday recently and I was able to enjoy it to the fullest, surrounded by new experiences, great weather, and a few of my favorite people on earth!

We started our day by taking the goat milking class mentioned in the previous post.  After a yummy lunch (also mentioned in the previous post), we returned home for some down time.  A thai dinner at Thai Chili in Rocklin, (they make an amazing black fried rice), then appetizers and dessert at Eric and Crystals.  Crystal actually made me a black forest cake.  To die for!!

A wonderful evening! 🙂
