The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture had a special ‘Homeschool Day’, where homeschool families were invited to enjoy the exhibits and activities.  They did not allow photos inside,(the photos are from the website), but the boys favorite things were looking at casts of dinosaurs and this mastadon:

Figuring out which minerals and rocks could be picked up with a magnet…

Looking at bees legs, butterfly wings, horse hair, etc. in a microscope…

But, the highlight was a part of a tour on the Giant Squid.

The kids listened to a speaker talk about the squid and re-created a model one across the 30 foot floor.  They then watched a video that showed a real (dead) giant squid that was found in a sperm whale belly.

Here are some shots of the kids outside.  We went with Linda/Linny.

…eating snow.  I caught this picture while I was inside and he was alone outside.

Celebrating Advent

Today was the first day of Advent.  We have never celebrated Advent before, but as we grow in our faith, teaching our boys about the true meaning of Christmas is priority.

I have the book, "Christ in Christmas: A Family Advent Celebration".  Each Sunday in Advent, there is a family time that includes a couple of songs, a prayer, a passage from the Bible, a decotional, and a family activity.

Tonight, DH read Isaiah 9:2-6
We sang "Away in a Manger" and "Jesus Loves Me"
I read a devotional and we talked about a few od the Christmas traditions we like:
‘A’ likes the presents
‘R’ likes candles
DH likes the angel candle thing where the candles heat a little windchime that rings bell (Our other one broke; I need to get a new one.)  He also likes putting up Christmas lights and decorating the tree.
I like playing Christmas music, and opening one gift on Christmas Eve (new PJs).

We also talked about what we can do as a family to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive.  We plan on participating in Advent, and ‘A’ said to continue praying.

We did an activity where we were all together in our dark bathroom.  I then lit a candle for each of us.  We talked about how it felt to be in the dark versus having light.  Which was more helpful?  How darkness can never vanquish light, and even the smallest amount of light can always vanquish darkness.  How Jesus is the light in our lives.

There are short readings for the rest of the week until next Sunday…

SNOW! SNOW! SNOW!

It began snowing Saturday afternoon.  We were told we’d probably get  2-3 inches.  Here are DH and the boys playing in the back yard…

We were stunned (and pleasantly surprised) to discover about a foot of snow this morning.  DH was on the worship band this morning, so he walked to church.  I made a snowman with the boys.

My handsome boys

DH and I had my FIL’s memorial service on November 30th.  We had it at this incredible chapel called the Chapel of St. Ignatius on the Seattle University campus.  If church architecture is of interest to you, please take the virtual tour on their site.  It does not do it justice, but it will give you an idea.  The slide presentation has very interesting facts about the property.  We are not Catholic, so there were many things of spiritual significance that we were not aware of.  It is truly a sacred place.

These pictures were taken of the boys before the service.  (I am having the most difficult time getting them to smile and act "normal".   They love to ham it up for the camera.)

Are You?

"When your friends think smile, they think of you. There is not a day that goes by that you can’t find something good about the world and your fellow human."

Bible
We read about the birth of Jesus in Bethleham and the shepherds who visit Jesus.

Memory Verse
Matthew 5:8 "Happy are those whose hearts are pure, for they shall see God."

Milly Molly Mandy-Chapter 6 "Milly Molly Mandy enjoys a visit"
This chapter mentioned making something called a "lid potato".  We made them for lunch one day and the boys loved them.  You bake a potato, cut a lid on top, scoop out the insides, mix the insides with butter, salt and pepper, and place back in the potato, and top with the lid.

"The Little Hero of Holland"
"Puss in Boots" (Both boys loved this story)
"The Little Sparrow"

Language arts
DEL-Auditory/Memory-I give the boys three tasks.  They do them after 60 seconds.  The tasks are becoming more difficult and both boys are getting some wrong, but I think I still do great for their age.
Comprehension/Sequence-place a series of pictures into order.  Both do great with this.
Motor/maze-very good.  Visual/Figue Ground-The boy shave to look at a cod and figure out what color goes with what shape accordong to this code.  ‘R’ was sick this day, so just ‘A’ did it and did it 100%.   Auditory/Rhyming-The boys had to look at pictures and connect the ones that rhyme.  Comprehension/Language-I read a sentence and they chose the picture that best suited the sentence.

First 1000 Words- We named items you would find in the garage, at home, and farm.

Science
We learned about Matter.  Matter is anything that takes up space and has a wight.  It can be a solid, liquid, or a gas.    We talked about examples of a solid, and the liquid, water.

Mama brag time…

Yesterday, ‘A’ figured out how to float on his back unassisted!!  He is totally confident in it and can float for a long period of time.  He can also kick to propel himself wherever (the back glide).  I will try to get pictures next week.

Megan and I (Linda) taught school this week.

Free play upstairs.  Boys town with tomboy, C3!

Sundy opened the group with ‘Ring a Round the Rosie’

Megan bought a bag of groceries to donate to the food bank and went over the ASL signs for the items in the bag. she then went over the alphabet.

The kids had a great time.

We also had a storytime.

Kathy reading to some of the kids.

And Sundy…

I had the kids make gingerbread ornaments.

The girls liked the dough! They played with it like play-doh!

Cutting out the ornaments

Here is the recipe I used to make the dough.

Gingerbread Ornament Dough

Gingerbread dough for craft projects that makes ornaments to hang or put in baskets that look and smell like real cookies and are made with normal ingredients but bake up rock hard and keep for years and smell great for years. Use gingerbread dough and your favorite cookie cutters to make gingerbread man garlands, gingerbread ornaments and houses.

  • 3 tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon of cloves, ginger and cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy, stir in molasses. Sift the dry ingredients together. Stir them into shortening mixture in 3 parts alternating with a 1/4 cup of water each time. Dough will be stiff. Refrigerate overnight.

Cut dough into 3 pieces. Knead to warm dough slightly, then roll each piece out about 1/4 inch thick. Cut cookie out with a gingerbread pattern of your choice.

Use a drinking straw to punch hole in center if ornament will be hanging. Place cookies on cookie sheet and bake 20 minutes, turn oven off and let cool in oven.

Remove from cookie sheet and place on rack to dry for about 3 days to totally harden. These cookies are purely for decorative purposes and not to be eaten. If you wish you can seal cookies with 3 coats of clear acrylic and decorate with colorful acrylic pains when dry.

Dado, Dada, and Great Aunt Elvira came up for dinner and to decorate our home for Christmas, (actually, they thought they were just coming up for dinner, but we had more in mind!!)  We had a great time decorating our tree and going through all the special items reserved for this season.

Elvira brought gifts got us.  She gave me the pretty yellow scarf I am wearing.  She gave DH a framed piccture of him dressed in a poncho and hat (it is soo cute!), and she gave the boys each a Hot Wheel type car and two clip on cows.  They loved they cars and were fascinated with the cows once they realized they clip to things.  Here is Dada dancing with the cows…

‘A’ putting the cow on Dado’s nose…

Dado and Dada brought up a couple of books for the boys.  Here is Elvira reading to them..

Decorating the Tree…

We put this nativity scene up for the first time.  This was my grandparents and it was passed on to us.  I love having it.  This means so much.  I pray it will survive our family, though.  One sheep disappeared for a few days and resurfaced under a cushion.  The shepherd was knocked off and broke in two.  Fortunately, I had superglue and it looks perfect.  The boys keep taking down the angel andlaying him on the table, "to give him a rest."

Family photo (includes Mandy and ‘Little Guy’.  Josh took the picture.)
