Lesson 10/24/07

We had a day filled with activities.  Soccer, swimming, F/X…but, ‘R’ spent all last night coughing, so I decided to keep us all home.  We cleaned, baked bread, I made soup, some ‘school’, and family time watching ‘Battlestar Galactica’ on our bed.

Bible
We read where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to make fire.

Read Aloud
"The Legend of the Big Dipper"

Science
BB Book-We read about caves, with water/mineral deposits that form called, stalagtites (ceiling down), and stalagmites (floor up).  These two will meet, but it takes about a million years to do so.
We looked up a bunch of pictures on these.

After KidzBounce, we went shopping.  The boys found a Venus Fly Trap and got all excited.  We had studied these a couple of weeks ago, and they are fascinated by them.  So, we have one.  I fear it won’t last too long here.  From what I have read, this is not their ideal environment.  We’ll see…

Lesson 1 in ‘Manners’ by Aliki (a cartoon book that has differenct scenarios showing good and bad manners)

I am going to explore my vegetarian/vegan side a little bit this week.  DH and I were vegetarian and vegan and different times through our 20’s.  We sometimes wonder why we don’t go back to that lifestyle.  We both felt immensely better. We have some new friends who are also exploring the vegan lifestyle (no animal products of any kind) and have enjoyed talking to them and sharing delicious meals.

So, I am going to try a few recipes this week from Vegweb and start to build up my veg recipe box.

Monday: Pesto chicken and pasta, broccoli

Tuesday: Tortilla-Black Bean Casserole, green salad, chips and salsa (ETA: This is delicious!  Will make again…)

Wednesday: Potato Carrot Soup, Homemade Bread (Both recipes are terrific!  Yummy!!)

Thursday: Chickpea and Mushroom Casserole, Spinach, Bread

Friday: Salsa Meatloaf, Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes

Saturday: (New pastor comes to dinner) Fruit and cheese tray, Salmon with pecan crunch, Rice Stuffing, Sesame Green Beans, Apple Pumpkin Dessert

Sunday: Leftovers

Saturday with friends

DH went to our church’s men’s retreat this weekend.  My friend, Kathy, came over with her kids and we spent a nice afternoon together.

Our oldest boys share the same name.  Here they are as knights!

Saturday night, I went to the David Crowder concert with three girlfriends.  My friend, Lisa, and I went to the very front and stood in front of the guitar guy.  We were the oldest people in the mosh pit, but we did not care!  It was loud and it was fun!!

I am the first to admit I am not a perfect mother.  At times, I can be downright nasty.  I spend much of my prayer time asking God to help me rid my frustrations, stresses, and anger before snappping (or even yelling) at my children.

One thing that God has really impressed on my heart is to ask forgiveness from my children at these times.  It has been hard at times.  I have wanted to justify my behavior because "I am the mom"  and everything I do is "right", even when it’s "wrong."

Anyway, a few days ago, I felt the need to ask forgiveness for an outburst I had the day prior.  I told the boys that I regretted the outburst and that it was not a reflection of them or their actions.  "A" said, "that’s OK, mommy, I forgive you.  I am going to make you an award for doing the right thing and asking forgiveness."

Here is my award…(as I type trhough tears…)

As I have said before, I praise God that I am not the person I was, and I praise God that I am not the person I am going to be.  I also praise God that my boys are growing hearts that model Jesus, not just because of, but in spite of, me.

A very busy 10/17/07

We began with soccer.  It was raining, but the kids did fantastic.  After soccer, we enjoyed some treats for ‘Lil A’s’ birthday.

After lunch, we met up with my friend Kris and her little boy.  We let the boys run under the awnings at the outlet mall.  After that was swim lessons.

We managed to get some lessons at home accomplished…

Bible
We read about Elijah meeting the widow and God provided flour and oil for a lifetime of bread for her.

Memory Verse
"Do not steal." Exodus 20:16

Read Aloud
Mother Goose- "The Old Woman From Surrey"
"Daddies"

Language Arts
DEL-The boys had to look at a maze and find the solution before putting the pen to paper.  ‘A’ did it immediately.  ‘R’ did it on the second try. (I did not think ‘R’ would be able to do this.  I am amazed.)

Life Skills
I just bought a new book titled ‘Manners’.  It is set in a comic book format.  We read a few pages that showed examples of someone using manners, and others, not.  They boys had to choose who was using good manner and who wasn’t.

Math
Practice writing numerals 1-10

We then went to our church for dinner and ‘Family Experience’ (F/X).  It is a fun evening with skits, music,  dancing, and Bible lesson on a virtue.  This month’s virtue is ‘Respect’-responding with words or actions to let someone know they are important.  The Bible memory verse is 1Peter2:17 "Show respect to everyone."

This is a project I began last year, but stopped for a while.  I am going back and catching up. ..

Blogger Friend School Assignment #7
BOUNTIFUL BLESSINGS

Our assignment this week is to blog about your plans for Thanksgiving Day…..share your day in any creative form.  Please try to include family traditions, your menus, who carves your turkey, do you save the wishbone, the list could go on and on.

We do not have set traditions for Thanksgiving.  We rotate families who host and the menu is at the discretion of the hostess.  Sometimes it’s potluck, sometimes not.

The one standard it that it is a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings.

Dado (abuelito) and Dada (abuelita) constructed and painted this playhouse for an auction for charity.  The boys had a great time breaking it in!  Prayers that this playhouse does well in the auction.  They put many hours and love into this project.

Nice job!!

Today, Linda hosted our group.  The theme was ‘red light/green light’ foods.  (red light are foods to be eaten sparingly as a treat, and green light foods are the ones that we make the majority of our diet.)

She began with a game of red light/green light.  The kids had to crawl to her, as she held up the red (stop) and green (go) cards.

Then, she had the kids circle ‘red light’ and ‘green light’ foods in the grocery ads.

C3 showing us the ‘green light’ foods…

C2 showing us the ‘red light’ foods…

While half of the kids were working on the food project, the other half were listening to a story…
