Lesson 5/29/07

Bible
Children’s Everyday Bible -We read about the woman Rebecca marrying Issac and having twins, Esau and Jacob.  We read where Jacob and Rebecca betrayed Isaac and Eau out of Esau’s birthright, and Jacob was sent away. We read about Jacob meeting Rachel and agreeing to work forseven years to marry her.  We read that his uncle betrayed him and gave Leah in marriage instead.  We read that Jacob worked for antoher seven years for Rachel.  We read that Jacob took his family back to his homeland to make thing right with Esau and was reconciled with him.  We read about Jacob’s youngest son Joseph and how he favored him with a special coat.  How his brothers were jealous and thre him in a pit.

Memory verse
2 Corinthians 9:7 "God loves a cheerful giver".  Generosity: I share my things with a cheerful spirit.

Read Aloud
Mother Goose- "Ding, Dong, Bell"
"The Greedy Farmer"

Language Arts
Developing the Early Learner- Ama was here today and helped the boys color this rainbow.
(BTW, ‘A’ is dressed up as Emeril, and ‘R’ is dressed up as ‘Top Chef’!)

Science
‘Berenstain Bear’s Book of Science’: We learned about how it is wind that makes a kite fly, and for a kite you need: a good frame, a long tail, a bunch of string.  You also need to go away from the wind, not with the wind to fly the kite.

Social Studies
‘Things People Do’-The Builder

Character
365 Manners… We learned about second helpings..It’s OK to have them when:

  • you are eating at home
  • everyone else has had firsts
  • seconds are on the table
  • seconds are offered
  • at a buffet…take a clean plate
  • if you are the host, you offer seconds to your guest first
  • if the guest takes seconds, it’s polite for you to also take seconds (even if it is a small amount, so the guest does not have to eat alone.)

Right Choices-We read about how important it is to obey your parents.

No reading today…

Math
Singapore Math-Lesson 11. The kids had to look at and recite numerals 1-5.  They also colored in balloons according to the number.

This was on the Washington State blog.  I thought it was pretty funny.  They do not know who this is from:

This may be old–don’t know.  But it made my day!

excerpt:

"’I’d like to homeschool but I’m worried that my children won’t be isolated enough. You see, in the school they now attend, they are safely isolated from people who aren’t their age, with the exception of their teachers. But I’m afraid if they aren’t safe at school all day, they’ll be meeting all sorts of people in the community. What can I do?

It’s true that, if you homeschool your children, they will probably meet all sorts of adults in the community, everyone from the mailman and various repair men to the people you will meet on field trips. It is also true that they will tend to meet more people who are not their age than people who are.

But I have yet to meet one homeschooling family that found this to be a disadvantage. Of course, it depends on how you define disadvantage. Your child may lose touch with the latest juvenile fads and probably won’t keep up on the current lingo. In fact, he may even end up sounding…well, sort of mature. "

Lesson 5/28/07

Bible
Children’s Everyday Bible-We read the story where God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac to test his faith, then gave him a ram to sacrifice instead.  I shared with the boys that Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and we no longer have to make these kind of sacrificial gestures to God.

Memory Verse
Practiced 2 Corinthians 9:7

Read Aloud
Mother Goose- "Ring a Ring of Rosies"  we also did the action to this.
‘Scuffy the Tugboat’

Language Arts
‘Developing the Early Learner’-The boys had to color the item that belonged to the picture at left:

‘Things People Do’: The Builder

Character
‘365 Manners…’. We learrned about Napkin etiquette: after the blessing, place napkin in lap where it is to stay through the meal.  If you have greasy fingers, wipe them on the napkin in your lap.  If you need to wipe your mouth, use the corner of the napkin and place it back on your lap.  If you need to leave the table, place the napkin on the seat, not on the table.
We looked up different napkin folds online and tried our hand at them.
We also learned about 10 things you must never do at the table: (I am quizzing the boys as I type this.  Let’s see how many they remember…)
1)Do not talk about gross things(A)
2)Do not take such a big bite that it alters your face(R)
3)Do not point the knife at someone(A)
4)Do not lean on one elbow and turn away from someone(A)
5)Don’t put a knife in your mouth
6)Don’t lean back on your chair
7)Don’t pick your teeth at the table with a toothpick
8)Don’t fish around on the service platter for the biggest piece
9)Don’t chew with your mouth open
10)Don’t push the plate back when finished

Right Choices-We learned about asking for and giving forgiveness.

Reading
100 Lessons- Lesson 10.  I am torn.  This is so far, too easy for ‘A’, and too difficult for ‘R’.  I know it gets more challenging for ‘A’, but I am bored with this.  I hope taht ‘R’ is getting a little soemthing out of it.  I will keep trying a little longer.

Math
Singapore Earlybird 1A-Lesson 10: The boys are now learning about ‘sets’.

Well, let me tell you…

On Saturday, DH and ‘R’ worked in the yard, while ‘A’ and  tackled the house.  We worked for about six hours!

The boys and I made a butterfly mobile for Ant-e Sara.  (Note to self: don’t ever do a craft that requires shaving crayons again.  However, if you absolutely have to, remember that a little goes a long way…)

Grandma Margaret and Grandpa Randy drove from Idaho and spent two nights with us.  On Saturday night,  we got together with Dado and Dada in honor of Ant-e Sara’s birthday (her friend, Kami, joined us.  We met at a terrific Italian pizzeria called Tutta Bella.  Their pizza is so yummy!

Sunday, we drove to a small town called Little Rock and attended a mini-family reunion for Grandma Margaret’s side of the family.   Three families from the same family live on parcels of about 32 acres.  The family that hosted our get together lived on six of the acres and had a horse farm.  Beautiful home, beautiful farm, beautiful view, beautiful family…the boys had a blast and hated to leave!
Our gracious hosts…

Their fabulous view…

‘A’ in heaven, riding Penny the pony…

‘C.C’ the cat, getting close to (I think that’s ‘Harold’….)

Our hosts had some darling Boston Terriers.  I love these dogs!

‘R’ and ‘A’ together…

‘Dottie’ was exhausted from all the activity….

Monday, DH and I made a big breakfast before Grandma and Grandpa left.  Shortly after, DH fell ill to the cold.  We laid low for the rest of the day, watching movies, with a little bit of school thrown in.

Lesson 5/25/07

We played this morning at a local park with a friend and her 3 year old daughter.  After that, I got my license renewed (almost a month late ).  We then had a little lunch and went to the library, where the boys played on the computers.  We began our homeschool activities around 1:30pm.  I ended up having to scrap "Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons".  "R" was not tracking at all.  I knew I was pushing it with class in the afternoon…

Science
Berenstain Bears Book of Science and Nature- We read that April Fools Day is on April 1st and it is a time to play jokes on others.

We also built our butterfly habitat and sent away for our butterfly caterpillars!  It could take 3-6 weeks,  but I sincerely hope they will come before that!  I was researching lapbook projects for a butterfly unit study and think that I can make up a project myself without buying one.

Misc
I kept the boys home an extra day to make sure we are not contagious.  It is such a gorgeous day, I decided to tackle the back deck.  Ugh!  I am only halfway complete.  So far I have scrubbed down the container pots, transplanted four plants, set up our water fountain, and swept and wet brushed the upper deck.  Here are some "in process" pictures…

I look forward to showing you the ‘after’!!
