(Did you miss me?  Did you wonder where I was? :))

Even though we were only one week into our Sonlight curriculum, it was time for a break.  We went with some friends of ours to Ocean Shores for three nights, four days.  The weather was perfect!  Both families rented condos at the same property and we were two doors from each other.  We brought some books for read alouds and the Bob books for ‘A’ to practice reading, but that was it in terms of homeschool activities.  ‘A’ asked a few times to have school, but I was adamant that this was a break.

Here is DH and ‘R’ flying ‘R’s ladybug kite

‘A’s Lizard kite

Playing cars in the dunes with Daddy

The rare shot with me in it

Burying a buddy 🙂

This is ‘R’s first shot without any assistance!

I love this picture.  It was late afternoon and I was reading from a book of Fairy Tales.

Gorgeous days; gorgeous nights…

My sweet Father in Law gifted me with a lovely bouquet of roses for Mother’s Day!  Aren’t they gorgeous?!

Lesson 5/10/07

We has C1 and C2 with us today!

Bible
Children’s Everyday Bible: Noah builds and ark and the animals embark

Memory Verse
‘A’ recited Proverbs 4:20 and ‘R’ can recite it with a little prompting

Read Aloud
‘The Contented Priest’
‘Miss Suzy’
‘Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are’
‘Flossie and the Fox’
‘Brown Angels’

Language Arts
Developing the Early Learner: Auditory/Memory- I gave each child a command.  I timed one minute.  They then had to complet the command:
1) For ‘A’: Color the stripe on the ball read; color the box blue- ‘A’ forgot the first part, but remembered the second.
2) For ‘R’: Put a line over the ball; put a line under the box-‘R’ did not recall either command.  This concept  is way over his attention span limit.
3)For ‘A’: Put an ‘x’ on the ball; put a hat over the box-‘A’ completed this correctly
4) For ‘R’: Color the ball yellow; color the box green-‘A’ completed this correctly.

Science
Read from Berenstain Bears Book of Science and Nature- We continued reading about winter and looked up pictures of snowflakes online.

Social Studies
Read from ‘Things People Do’-continued with introduction od the Island of Banilla

Reading
‘Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons’-Lesson 4- worked on sounds: mmmm, aaaa, ssss, ma, sa

Lesson 5/9/07

Life
Dentist appointment for both boys.  All looking great!

Bible
Children’s Everyday Bible: Adam and Eve were sent out of Eden

Memory Verse
‘A’ Recited Proverbs 4:20.  ‘R’ is almost there.

Read Aloud
‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ rhyme
‘The Little Fat Policeman’

Language Arts
Developing the Early Learner worksheets.  Motor: The boys had to follow along a curvy dotted line.

Visual: Memory-I placed four items on the ground (a doll, a paper clip, a pair of scissors, and a box of crayons).  The boys looked at them.   They closed their eyes and I removed one item.  They had to figure out what was missing.  Both did very well.

Social Studies
Continued reading about the fictional island of Banilla in "Things People Do."

Reading
Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons– Lesson 3.  I decided to not do the writing portion of this.  ‘A’ becomes pretty stressed and writing is beyond ‘R’s comprehension at this time, so we will wait.  But the verbal part, we will keep.

I might have ‘A’ attempt a Dick and Jane book later today.

Character
We read from 365 Manners Your Kids Should Know.  We learned about the formal table setting, and will continue setting the informal table tonight.

We read Right Choices.  We learned what it means to steal and that it is wrong.  We also read the verse, Exodus 20:15, "You must not steal".

Math
Singapore Earlybird 1A-Lesson 3.  I told them the stoy of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and talked about the difference between big and small (chairs, bowls, beds).  The boys had to match lids to their containers (small, medium, big).  The boys circled the small animals on the page.

I LOVE THIS MAN!

I love it that he will take the time to make a ‘bad guy’ costume to play with the boys.  ‘A’s favorite activity is to play ‘Batman’ and DH alternates between being ‘Alfred’, a good guy named ‘Gregarious’ (because ‘R’ does not like ‘bad guys’) and bad guys (the classic ‘Joker’, ‘Penguin’, ‘Riddler’, the unique ‘Chicken Fingers,  or this concoction…)

If they catch me on a good day, I will be ‘Catwoman’ or ‘Mamago’ (a play on the ‘Shego’ character in Kim Possible), but this is definitely Daddy’s arena, not mine.

Lesson 5/8/07

It was a beautiful day today!  The boys played out in the backyard this morning.  ‘A’ came in and asked for an umbrella because he was hot.  This is what I found a little later…

Bible
Children’s Everyday Bible: We read that God created man and woman and we read about the forbidden fruit.

Memory Verse
‘A’ recited Proverbs 4:20 "Pay attention, my child, to what I say.  Listen carefully."
‘R’ says it with prompting.

Read Aloud
Simple Simon Rhyme
Rabbit and Tiger Save the World

Language Arts
Developing the Early Learner Book 1 worksheets.  The boys had to look at a picture and decide which picture belongs with it. (ex.  a match goes with a fire or a forest…)  They got them all correct.

Science
Berenstain Bears Book of Science and Nature:  We read about ‘winter’ and learned that:

  • the first three months of the year are winter: January, February, March
  • it’s c-c-c-c-oooooolllllldddddd
  • you can see your breath
  • bears hibernate in winter
  • it snows

Social Studies
We read about the fictional Island of Banilla again and all the people that love and work there in the book ‘Things People Do.’

Character
We read from 365 Manners Every Child Should Know.  We learned how to set an informal table, with the plate in the center, the napkin and for on the left, the knife next to the plate on the right and the spoon.  The water glass above the knife, the dessert or salad plate above the fork.  All need to be straight and level to each other.

The boys set the table that evening with Daddy.

We read Right Choices.  We learned that it is wrong to tell a lie and that it is more important in the eyes of God to admit wrongoing and ask forgiveness than it is to lie to avoid the consequence.  We also read the verse, Ephesians 20:16 ‘You must not tell lies.’

Math
Singapore Earlybird 1A Math Workbook Lesson 2:  1) The boys drew lines connecting items that went together (ex. notepad and pencil, rice bowl and chopsticks, paint can and paintbrush, etc.) 2) They looked at an item on the left and had to circle the one item out of three that went with it (ex. the hand goes with the hat, flipflop, or glove). 3) They had to cross out an item that does not belong (ex. car, teddy bear, wagon, skateboard) and had to say why it did not belong (because it does not have wheels). 4) The last page had a table with clothes all over it.  ‘R’ had to color only the items that were for a girl and ‘A’ had to color the items that were for a boy.  (They both got one "Wrong", which is debatable because a girl would wear a baseball cap and a boy would wear this type of shoe, but in the context of this page, we had to set parameters.)

Reading
I had my mother’s helper with me today.  She helped with some of the homeschool activities, including listening to ‘A’ read.  I know he read one of the earlier Bob Books and I think that’s all we had time for.

We began Lesson 2 in "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", but we did not have time to finish it.

Physical
The boys rode their bikes around the block with Daddy
‘A’ had martial arts.
The boys and I met up with friends after dinner to ride bikes at Rattlesnake Lake.

Life
Grocery Run
Bank
Shopped for clothes for me
Library
The only ‘to do’ that we did not get to was getting the car washed.  Tomorrow, maybe.

Here we are at a great little homespun restaurant called ‘Kates’:

Lesson 5/7/07

Well, we are home sick, yet again!  ‘R’ woke at 2:30 this morning vomiting and diarrhea.  So far, he only had the one bout, and ‘A’ is acting O.K., so prayers that it was just the one time!

Language Arts
The boys did three workbook pages in Developing the Early Learner.
Motor: The first page had them draw from the rabbit to the carrot without touching lines or lifting their marker.  Both did an excellent job, and faster than I anticipated for ‘R’.

Visual:The boys had to identify and mark pictures tht were identical.  Both were correct.
Auditory: The boys closed their eyes and listened to sounds I made.  They had to circle a face that represented whether the sounds were identical or different.  ‘A’ got all correct. ‘R’ missed the first one only.

Bible
We read from the Children’s Everyday Bible: God creates the earth and the animals
We practiced our memory verse: Proverbs 4:20 "Pay attention, my child, to what I say.  Listen carefully".
We talked about what it means to pay attention/attentiveness

Read Aloud
Jack and Jill Nursery Rhyme

Social Studies
We read from ‘Things People Do’ and learned about the Island of Banilla (fictional island)

Reading
We did Lesson one in ‘Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Days’.
‘A’ read the Bob Book Volume 1, Book 12, ‘The Vet’.  This is the last book in this volume.

Character
We read from 365 Manner Kids Should Know.  Today, we learned about what not to bring to the table when it’s time to eat: handheld video games, remote control (no TV), magazines, books, newspaper, homework, the cat…

We read from "Right Choices: Helping Kid’s Live God’s Way".  We talked about things and people we are thankful for, said a prayer of thankgiving, and read Psalm 105:1: "Thank the Lord for all the glorious things he does."

Math
Lesson one in Singapore Earlybird 1a.  1) The boys looked at a page and told me which fish are identical.  2) They drew lines from one object to the identical object.  2) They circled items that were not the same as the other three in a row.  3)They colored two identical ofjects from a row of four.
Both boys have a solid grasp of same/different/identical and were able to complete these without difficulty.

 Art
Freeform color on paper, cut and staple to make a "book".  ‘A’ says his is a menu and book together.

Culinary
The boys helped me make meatloaf.  I measured the ingredients and they took turns placing the items in the bowl.  We all tore bread into small pieces.
