A said: “because they were given with love.”

“What are some “gifts” you can give back to Jesus?”
A said: singing

A said: love my family

Conflict

(This is what I wrote for our February MOPS newletter)

I just returned from a three week vacation with my husband and two boys.  The bonus to a vacation in Hawaii is the two hour time change.  I would wake up between four and five in the morning, ready to take on the day.  Since everyone else was still asleep, I was able to really spend some quality quiet time in Bible study, prayer, and reading.  My husband would join me around six AM and we would do a Bible study together, titled, “21 Days to Healthy Habits for your Family”, until the boys woke an hour later.

I would sit on the lanai and watch the sunrise, while listening to the waves and the variety of Hawaiian birds.   My heart was bursting with joy and gratitude for the blessings that each morning brought.  Sounds idyllic, right?

Then we returned home.

Now, instead of bounding out of bed ahead of schedule, I am dragging myself.  I feel like I am exhausted for a good part of the day.  And I come home to conflict.  Lots of it.  With my own spouse.  Among my family members.  Among my friends.  Top major health issues with some loved ones, a nasty bout of PMS, (something that did not exist for me until this past year) and I am at the point that I just want to hop back on the next plane back to my little happy place in the sun.

I was at a breaking point this past Sunday.  I was debating whether I should go to church because I knew that if anyone looked at me and saw through the smile, I would be a blubbering mess.  (Someone did.  I was.)

Guess what the service was about that day?  C-O-N-F-L-I-C-T

At that point, I had to decide, do I leave and not hear what I know will be hard to hear, or do I stay and listen to what I know God wants me to learn, (and hold me accountable for my part in the conflict, something I was not thrilled with)?

I stayed, and I want to share with you what our pastor, John, shared with us.  I encourage you to look up the scripture references for deeper understanding and application.  I assume that others beside myself have to deal with conflict and hope that this will help you as it did me.

“The Great Race: The Value of Conflict”

11 Timothy 2:14-26

Today’s Key Truth:  Healthy conflict can be your best friend and unhealthy conflict can be your worst enemy.

John quoted from Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott that, “the road to intimacy in marriage is paved in conflict.  It leads to greater levels of understanding.”

(Riiiiiiiight……not feeling too understood or intimate at this time, John…<note heavy sarcastic undertone>)

Then, he introduces that concept of “healthy conflict”.  Who knew there was such a thing?  As someone who avoids conflict like a plague, I never hang around long enough to decipher whether conflict can be healthy or not.

Healthy conflict flows from healthy Identity, an identity rooted in Christ.  If you know who you are a Christ sees you, and can really believe that, then insecurities and self-esteem issues dissipate.

Healthy conflict flows from healthy Motives.   Being at peace together.

Healthy conflict flows from healthy Habits.  How many of us have healthy habits of communicating, listening, the use of tone in our voice?  How many of us had healthy role models for these habits while growing up?

Healthy conflict flows from healthy Trust.

John encouraged us to do a Conflict Assessment, rating how we are doing.  For the really courageous, he encouraged us to do it with our spouse…

CCC Top Ten Tips for Healthy Conflict by John Jenks

Conflict in the church is a dangerous reality that can hurt and discourage people.  When it is unhealthy conflict it can become habitual and cripple a church.  Conflict can also be an opportunity to experience new levels of positive community and ministry.   Sometimes the road to intimacy and love is paved with healthy conflict.  But it’s not always easy!  Even healthy conflict can be difficult to experience, but it can be valuable.  It takes real discernment to not “make mountains out of molehills, or molehills out of mountains.”  Sometimes we avoid conflict when we should enter into the hard work of wrestling through difficult issues with each other.  At other times we need to let things go and not worry about the small stuff.  We need to live in obedience to the priority of love, harmony, and community even as we wrestle with inevitable relational challenges with each other.  Each of us needs to take the needed and biblical responsibility to do everything we can to live in harmony with others in God’s family. (Romans 12:18)  As we grow in our own personal, spiritual, and emotional health we increase our potential to engage in all levels of conflict, from the casual disagreement to experiences of intense discord with others.

  1. Remember: Healthy conflict can be your best friend and unhealthy conflict can be your worst enemy (II Timothy 2:14-26)
  2. Live with realistic expectations. (Philippians 4:1-3.  Some conflict in the church is inevitable.  In any church, no one will agree with everything all the time.  Everyone at various points in their experience in the church will need to respond to something they don’t like or agree with.  Doing this with maturity and a commitment to love others and support the church is vital.
  3. Do not “Triangle”. (Matthew 18:15-17)  Go directly, go quickly and go with a reconciling spirit.
  4. No slandering or gossip allowed. (1 Peter 2:1, Proverbs 11:13 and 16:28)
  5. Major on the majors and minor on the minors (Freedom in Christ), or…”Don’t sweat the small stuff”. (Romans 14)  In essentials-agreement, in the non-essentials-freedom, and in all-love.
  6. In the midst of conflict, we will treat each other well: with dignity, kindness, courtesy and respect. (Colossians 3:12, Galatians 5:22)
  7. Let’s strive for honesty, with each other and with ourselves.  We need to be honest with each other in our communication.  We also need to be honest with ourselves and recognize that sometimes, “The issue is not really the issue”.  Without honest self evaluation sometimes we can argue about one thing when the real issue is something inside of us that is pushing us towards conflict and fueling our intensity. (Often fear, hurt, insecurity, desire for control, etc…)(Matthew 5:36-37, Romans 12:3 and Psalm 51:6)
  8. We will not hold grudges.  We will be people of forgiveness. (Colossians 3:12-14)
  9. We will pray for each other (John 17 and Colossians 1:3)
  10. We will be committed to loving each other and wishing each other well.  (I Corinthians 13. I John, John 13:34-35, and Ephesians 1:2)

Lesson 2/26/07

Fingerplay “One Special Baby”

Bible Story
Matthew 2:1-2, 9-10
Children’s Bible: Magi followed God’s star to Jesus.

Math Activity
We had our neighbor friend, ‘J age 3’ visit us today.  I made shapes on a piece of paper and had the boys copy them.

‘R’ is the left one, ‘A’ is the right.  The items that are circles are the ones I assisted them with.

I drew shapes on cards and quizzed the boys with them.  I also placed the spanish word of the shape on the card.  Then, I drew a card and asked the boys to find that shape somehwere throughout the house.  They enjoyed this and have been finding shapes on their own. (TV=rectangle, pillow=square, seat=circle, etc.)

(yes, those are socks on his hands.  They use them as “gloves” when “dueling ” with their plastic swords.)

Letter Activity
Hide and Seek ‘Q’

Here is ‘R’ and ‘J’ playing with the train set.

I had another dental appointment today (my last one for a while, yay!), so the boys went to our friends house to play for the afternoon.

Social
We attended a birthday "princess" party today.  The boys were ‘princes’

Misc.
We played "Deal or No Deal" on the computer.  It is a fun way to teach the boys the numbers from 1-26.
They also went to the Starfall.com site and spent some time there.

Lesson 2/20/07

I had a doctor’s appointment this morning, so the boys went to my friend Liz’s house and played with her two children.

After the appointment, I called a friend of mine.  She was pretty sick, so I brought her kids home to join us today! (They attend public school, but are on their mid-winter break.)

We looked at the ‘Q’ flashcard and studies the upper and lower case ‘Q’.

Bible Activity
Yellow is for the bright light that shone from heaven as the angels sang about
Jesus’ birth.

I had the kids brainstorm items that were yellow.  They chose: giraffe, mustard, daisy, corn, sun, tulip.
I printed graphics and cute them.  The kids colored and pasted the items.

I also introduced the Spanish words: amarillo=yellow, daisy=margarita, corn=maiz, sun=el sol

Here is ‘B’, age 7?

Here is ‘R’, age 5

Here is ‘A’, age 3

My ‘A’

My ‘R’

Music
Played, "Starry Sky"

A mac and cheese, peanut butter and apple lunch was enjoyed by all…

The kids played in the backyard with DH for the hour that there was no rain.  After that, we took the kids home and I took my boys to martial arts.  ‘R’ has been able to participate a little in class.  He is still too young to fully participate yet.

We also picked up some new books from the library (see ‘Our Reading Table’).

I have decided to start incorporating some "Countdown to Easter" traditions for our family.  I have a book, titled,  "Family Countdown to Easter".  Today, (Tuesday), is known as Shrove Tuesday, AKA, Mardi Gras!
On this day, you typically eat rich foods in anticipation of Lent.  It is also known as "Pancake Tuesday", because pancake are made from "rich" ingredients.  So, I made a pancake dinner!

Lesson 2/19/07

Fingerplay
"What do you know? (A review of the letters A-P)

Bible Story
Daniel 6:3, 11-14, 16, 19-23
Daniel prayed to God even though there was a law to pray only to the king.  He was thrown in the lion’s den and an angel closed the lions mouths and saved Daniel.

Dramatic Play
To mimic the story of the men hiding to watch Daniel pray, I took a stuffed animal and hid it around the room.  I told the boys they were "hot" or "cold" if they were near it.  We took turns hiding the toy.  "A" could not stand waiting for me to find it.  He had to tell me where it was.

Letter Activity
I placed a piece of paper in front of the boys and told them to write the letter I told them to.
I also verbally quizzed them on the lowercase letters a-p.  ‘A’ got them all right.  ‘R’ got most right.

I also had the boys quiz each other with the flashcards.  ‘A’ got 100%, ‘R’ did as well with a little prompting.

Bible Activity
We acted out the Bible story of Daniel and the lions den.

Devotional Activity
We reviewed the following verses:
1 John 3:18 "My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth:
Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters."
Psalm 118:1 "Oh, give thanks to th eLord, for He is good!"
Psalm 147:1 "Praise the Lord!  For it is good to sing praises to our God."

Bible Activity
We discussed how God is very special, and we should treat him that way.  I had the boys practice saying, "I like you" to their stuffed animals in different voices (silly, angry, high, low, laughing).  I then had them say "I like you", with a voice that really means how special that stuffed animal is to them.  I pointed out that this is the way we should speak to God.

Art Activity
The boys painted a paper plate and I drew a lion’s face on it.  The boys cut the outer edge of the plate and I curled it to represent the lion’s mane of hair.

Lesson 2/15/07

Fingerplay
"what do you know?"

Bible Story
Daniel 5:3-6, 12, 26-28
Children’s Bible: God writes on the wall in front of Daniel and the king

Active Exploration
I placed rice on a cookie sheet with colored paper underneath and had the boys make letters, numbers, and pictures with the rice.

Letter Activity
"Hide and Seek Review"

Bible Activity
The boys had to follow directions, one at a time.  Trace hand in middle of page.  Write ‘C’ above hand.  Write ‘J’ on the left side.  Write ‘L’ on the right.  Write ‘O’ below the hand.

Lesson 2/14/07

We had some friends visit today and attend our class…

Fingerplay
“What do you know?”

Bible Story
Daniel 1:3-5, 8, 17
Children’s Bible: Daniel would not eat the king’s food.

Math Activity
I set out two plastic plates; one had a bunch of cheese crackers on them.  I asked each boy, one at a time, to place a certain number of crackers on the other plate.  I went up to 16 for ‘C1’, 13 for ‘A’, 8 for ‘R’, and 5 for ‘C2’.  I also wrote a number on a card and had ‘C1 and A’ place the correct number of crackers on the plate.

Letter Activity
We reviewed all the flashcards from A-P.  I would show the boys a flashcard and all who knew it raised their hand.  I picked a boy to answer and if it was correct, he got a cracker.  I then asked, “what word starts with the letter ___?”  A correct answer also got a cracker.
I then quizzed each boy individually.

Craft
We made a “hug” for DH.  I measured yarn from outstretched hands to represent a hug.

Lesson 2/13/07

Fingerplay
"One to Ten"

Bible Story
Jonah 2:10; 3:1-5, 10
Children’s Bible: Jonah did what God said .

Devotional Activity
Psalm 147:1 "Praise the Lord!  For it is good to sing praises to our God."
We read a devotional that revolved around this Psalm and talked about why we should praise the Lord.
We also reviewed the previous four verses) Psalm 118:1, Matthew 6:24, 1 John 3:18

Letter Activity
We looked at the letter ‘P’ flashcard and ‘A’  threw out words that started with the letter ‘P’:picture, paper, pig, pineapple, pat, peepee, peas, potato, Percy, pet (I think cousin ‘K’ added some of these, but can’t recall who said what)

Bible Activity
We talked about the kind things that we can do for others because of God’s love for us.  Cousin ‘K’ and ‘A’ said:

  • hug
  • be nice
  • no hitting
  • helm someone do something
  • be happy
  • pray
  • talk to them

Music
Played "Jonah and the Whale"

Lesson 2/12/07

We did seven days of lessons while in Maui.  Since I did not take pictures and it would be a lot of time to record what we did, I have chosen not to record them here.

We are (more or less) back to our regular routine here.

Fingerplay
"One to Ten"

Bible Story
Jonah 2:10, 3:1-5, 10
Children’s Bible: Jonah preached to Ninevah and they were saved

Dramatic Play
The boys pretended they were the giant fish and their sock ball was ‘Jonah’.  They "spit out" (threw) Jonah onto "dry land" (into the box.)  If it landed in the box, we cheered and said, ‘yay, Jonah is in Ninevah!  But, if it landed outside of the box, I would say that Jonah landed beside, out, next to, far away, close to, and near.  The boys loved this activity and played it longer after I was ready to move on.

Letter Activity
I wrote the letter ‘P’ on a piece of paper.  The boys placed glue on it (I assisted ‘R’), and glued popcorn kernels on it.

Bible Activity
We discussed the importance of listening and following directions, like the Ninevites did to Jonah.  Each boy took a stuffed animal and gave them commands like, clap your paws, jump up and down, spin around, etc.

Music
We listened to "Jonah and the Whale"

Social/P.E.
We met up with friends and walked to our river and threw rocks.
