Pine Needles

As I enter this holiday season, I am conscious of keeping my heart full of thanksgiving and gratitude for all the blessings in my life.  I have been praying for God to help me find (and acknowledge) the everyday blessings, the ones we tend to take for granted.  Guess what He brought into my path?  Pine needles!

Pine needles?  You mean those nasty little things that infiltrate every surface of my home?  Never mind their place all over my floors.  Let’s talk about how they manage to find their way into my bed, onto my dining table, socks, sleepwear, window sills, cat food dishes, etc.

How in the world can pine needles be a blessing?

Then, I am reminded of the days before kids.  The days where hubby and I were living the ultimate DINK (double-income, no kids) lifestyle.  We had a fabulous apartment in Belltown.  We had our own gym on the ground floor, complete with swimming pool and Jacuzzi.  We had a covered parking stall in a secure garage for the car we never drove.  We walked to work and walked to all the cool, trendy restaurants downtown.  We had a social circle of friends that meant late nights and good times.

Then, I am reminded of the feelings of claustrophobia I would feel while living downtown.  I would look all around and see high-rises, cars, and masses of people who avoided eye contact, never smiling (unless they are talking to someone on their cell phone).  I can remember the taste in the back of my throat of the exhaust fumes and pollution that was ever present on the streets, and in our apartment.

I can also remember the total lack of nature.  If I wanted to find a tree, or grass, I needed to go into one of the bordering neighborhoods and find a park. All the fine restaurants and culture that the city provided has nothing on the single perfection of the pine needle.

The fact that I have a home, in the woods, that affords me the opportunity to sweep out pine needles everyday, what a blessing!  To be within a few minutes of lakes, hiking trails, the river, and to be able to raise my boys surrounded by this natural beauty, let alone a circle of friends that have transcended the social and have introduced me to what real friendship is, I would not trade this life for our old one for anything!  Yay, pine needles!

Now, what is your pine needle?  What everyday “thing” are you thankful for?

Lesson 11/7/06

Fingerplay:

“God Sends Samuel”

Bible Story:

1 Samuel 3:8-10

Children's Bible:  Story of when God called to Samuel.

Math Activity:

The boys listend to me making a rhythmic pattern and copied.  stomp-clap, etc.

We started with two actions, then to three, then went of up about six to eight rhythms to copy.  'A' did an excellent job following all the patterns.  'R' could handle the two action patterns.

Letter Activity:

Hide and Seek 'J'.  Both were able to find all the 'J's without assistance.

Bible Activity:

I gave each boy a piece of paper.  They had to complete each of the directions one at a time:

1.  Draw two black lines coming down from the TOP of the paper (This represents God's voice)

2.  Draw a yellow rectangle on the LEFT side of the page (this represents Samuel's pillow)

3.  Draw a blue square on the RIGHT side of the page (this represents Samuel's blanket)

4.  On the BOTTOM on the page, write out the letters Y.E.S. (This represents what Samuel said to God)

I assisted 'R' on all the letters and talked him through on the shapes.  I assisted 'A' with the letter 'S' only.

Music

Played, listened and sang to “Samuel, Samuel”

P.E./Nature

We are experiencing record floods in this area.  Even though we are safe, many friends are either flooded or on the verge of flooding.  We are unable to get to martial arts because the road is closed, so we went on a “puddle jump” walk today.  We also walked to see our river.  It is running so fast and hard, it's hard to even recognize that this is even “our” river.

Lesson 11/6/06

Fingerplay

“God Sends Samuel”

Bible Story

1 Samuel 2:26-28

Children's Bible: Story where Samuel leaves Hannah to live as God' helper with Eli

Devotional Activity

From “My ABC Bible Verses”: John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…”

We read a story that incorporated this verse, said the verse three times, then went through the verses we have already covered.

I also made little verse cards with all the verses we have covered.  I placed them on the coffee table.  The boys can pick them up anytime they want and ask us to read it.

Letter Activity

The boys watercolored the letter 'J'.  I asked that they pay close attention to staying inside the lines.  I think they both did a terrific job.  I also love the colors they chose!

Bible Activity

We re-enacted the Bibel story we read.  I was Eli, the priest.  The boys pretended to be Hannah, and their stuffed animals were “Samuel”.

'Hannah' was supposed to say: “This is Samuel. He will be your helper.”

Then, 'Samuel” (stuffed animal) was handed over to me/Eli.

'Eli' says: “Samuel will be with me and serve God.”

The first time we did this, 'A' forgot what to say, and said:

” I am done with him.  Here, you can have him!”

We did this over and over, changing characters…

Music

We played and sang, “Samuel, Samuel”

Math Activity

The boys drew two baby faces in each square.  I introduced the concept of counting by twos…

Life Skills

We all learned how to bake a pumpkin!  I cut off the top and we all gathered the seeds.  Here are the boys scooping with spoons:

Pumpkin fractions!  Here is a picture of the four quarters…

I further divided into 1/8's and baked on cookie sheets at 375 degrees for one hour.

After placing the pulp through a strainer to get rid of the excess water, we counted out two cup increments and placed them into plastic gallon bags for freezing.  We had five bags with 2 cups each and one bag with 1.5 cups.  Again, I introduced the concept of counting by 2's…

Bible Story:

1 Samuel 1:10-11, 17

Children's Bible: Hannah asked God for a son

Active Exploration

I had the boys look at pictures of themselves at special events such as their birth, holidays, parties, vacations, etc.  We talked about the people in the pictures and what each event meant.  We talked about the memories of each event and talked about being thankful for the people in the pictures and the opportunity to have such spcial occasions/events.

Letter Activity

We studied the 'J' flashcard and talked about words that started with the letter 'J'.

Lesson 11/2/06

(I had MOPS today, so my friend taught the boys today)

Fingerplay:

“Nothing's Impossible for God”

Bible Story

Ruth 2:2-7

Children's Bible: Ruth was a hard worker in the wheat fields.

Art Activity

These turned out so cute!  My friend drew wheat stalks on a pieve of yellow construction paper.  The boys glued popcorn kernels on them.  this represents the wheat that Ruth picked up in the field all day in the hot sun.

Letter Activity

More practice writing the letter 'I'

P.E.

'A' had martial arts

Lesson 11/1/06

Fingerplay:

Bible Story:

Ruth 1:15-18

Children's Bible:  The story of Ruth and Naomi

Devotional Activity:

Philippians 4:13  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

We read a story that corresponds to this verse.  We also repeated this verse three times, and reviewed the previous seven verses we have studied.  (I plan on making a verse basket to keep on the coffee table to encourage memorization).

Letter Activity

The boys traced the letter 'I' in the flashcard with their finger.  'A' practiced writing it.

Bible Activity

We talked about how Ruth was a good daughter in law to stay with Naomi, even though she did not have to.  I asked the boys what ways they could be “good sons” to us.  'A' said: “hugging, trying hard, practiving, taking care of pets.”

I threw in: “obeying, helping at home, being kind to brother, sharing.”

Blogger Friend School ~ Assignment #5

"Getting into the Spirit"

Our assignment this week, is to blog about "Getting into the Spirit".  I would like everyone to cover 3 areas in their posts:

  1. Share your family traditions for Christmas and/or Advent
  2. List 10 ways that you can prepare for the season
  3. Post a scripture that will help you "Get into the Spirit"

1.  We travel interstate quite a bit during the holidays.  Our celebration begins about two weeks prior and does not let up until New Year weekend.   Our anniversary and ‘A’s birthday is also in December, so it is one festive month!

Our traditions include:

  • One present on Christmas eve.  It is always a new pair of PJs to wear that night.
  • We cut our own tree at a local tree farm.
  • We have not done stockings yet, but will probably begin this year.
  • Participate in Operation Christmas Child
  • Participate in a giving tree
  • We have not started this yet, but would like to.  Have a "Birthday Party" for Jesus.
  • Make a gingerbread house
  • When the boys are older, I would like to do what my mom did with us.  She would start a holiday puzzle about two weeks prior and we would work as a family to complete it by Christmas.
  • DH and I do not buy things for each other.  We head to Maui trip in January.  We will then buy a few things there.

2) 10 ways to prepare for the season

  1. Pray for peace of mind and balance
  2. Read the Christmas Story from the Bible often
  3. Make a list early and try to have shopping for gifts completed in November
  4. Play Christmas music
  5. Burn scented candles
  6. Enjoy the lights of the season.  Drive through neighborhoods at night.
  7. Drink hot cocoa (with peppermint)  instead of coffee
  8. Keep your heart full of love and gratitude
  9. Start getting ideas for menus, look through magazine, cookbooks
  10. Get out the decorations

3) Scripture that will help you get "into the Spirit"

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."  Matthew 1:21

Lesson 10/31/06

Fingerplay:  “Nothing is impossible for God.”

Bible Story:  Judges 16:17-19, 21-22, 28-30

Children's Bible:  The story where Samson get his hair cut and loses his strength.

But God gave it back.

Dramatic Play:  The kids built two pillars of blocks and stood between them, like Samson.  Then, they too rolled sock and threw them at the pillars to knock them down.  Each boy took turns building and knocking down.

Letter Activity:  I drew the letter 'I' on a piece of paper, and glued over it.  The boys placed cereal o's on the letter for create an 'I'.

Bible Activity:

We talked about hos God gave Samson the gift and talent of strength.  I asked what kind of talents did God give each boy?  'A' responded: watching TV, and playing video games, and playing on my IMac.  'R' said: playing cars.  'O' said: Kitty cats.

(Hmmm, I think we need to work on this one a bit…)

Math Activity:  'Count on Me' worksheet.  'A' made 1-5 circled in each box.  'R' did one circle in each box.

Music:  Sang and played “They were Judges”

Read Aloud:  Along with the other books we are currently reading, (Goldilocks, The Gingerbread Man, The Little Red Hen, The Childrens Garden of verses), we just introduced 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.

Lesson 10/30/06

Theme:

We finally finished our 'Apple' Lapbook!  Our final activity was to make crockpot applesauce.  Here are some pictures of the boys weighing the apples and stirring the ingredients together.

Fingerplay:

“Nothing is impossible for God.” (Introduce the letter 'I')

Bible Story:

Scripture: Judges 7:5-7, 16:2-3

Children's Bible:  We read about Samson and his strength, and about Gideon and how God told him to choose his army by the way the men drink from the river.

Active Exploration/Spanish:

The boys looked in a mirror and pointed out parts of their body.  I told them what the names were in Spanish:

hair-pelo

eyes-ojos

eyebrows-cejas

nose-mariz

mouth-boca

ears-orejas

stomach-estomago

fingers-dedos

knees-rodillas

toes-dedos de pie

Letter Activity:

I introduced the letter 'I/i' with flashcards.  The boys traced them with their fingers and repeated the long and short sounds. (Ice cream and Indian)

They also did the “Hide and Seek” worksheet.  'A' got them all correct without assistance.  'R' was not feeling well and went to lay down, so he did not complete it.

'A' also practiced writing lower case 'f'.

Bible Activity

I directed 'A' to make a wavy line to represent a river.  'A' kept making large “waves”.  Then, he was to make a pink smiley face to represent the men at the river.  Then, I traced his hand and 'A' circled it to represent God telling Gideon to choose the ment who drank with their hands, instead of putting their faces in the river and lapping like dogs.

We are also working on memorizing 'The Ten Commandments'

Music:

Played and sang, “They were Judges”

Math Activity

I placed a variety of canned and boxed goods on the floor.  The boys were to decide what was lightest to heaviest.  They decided this order:

1. Ramen-lightest

2. Fig Newton Box

3. Juice box

4. Macaroni and Cheese

5. Can of beets

6. Corn

7. Squash Soup-heaviest

After weighing everything, the results were:

1. Ramen was lightest at 3oz.

2.  Juice box 6.5oz.

3. Mac and cheese 8oz.

4.  Beets 9oz.

5. Fig Newtons 12oz.

6. Corn 1lb 2oz.

7. Squash Soup 2 lb 6oz.

Family Fun Weekend

Thursday night, we were pleasantly surprised by a visit with my father.  He was in town to spend the night with my brother before they left for a hunting trip.  The boys had a great time playing with Grandpa G. and reading with him.

Saturday, Grandma M. came up and spent the night.  The boys spend a bunch of time playing in the backyard and swinging with her.  They also read with her and showed off their knight costumes.

Sunday, Dado and Dada (Grandpa F. and Grandma E.) came up and carved pumpkins with the boys.  'A's face while taking the seeds out with his hands was precious.  'R' wanted nothing to do with putting his hand inside THAT!

We are so grateful and feel truly blessed to have such wonderful grandparents for our children.
