{"id":224183,"date":"2006-10-21T18:14:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-21T18:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2006\/10\/21\/field-trip-issaquah-salmon-hatchery-10-18-06\/"},"modified":"2011-10-08T04:04:06","modified_gmt":"2011-10-08T04:04:06","slug":"field-trip-issaquah-salmon-hatchery-10-18-06","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2006\/10\/21\/field-trip-issaquah-salmon-hatchery-10-18-06\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Trip: Issaquah Salmon Hatchery 10\/18\/06"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">Our homsechool group went on a field trip to the Issaquah salmon hatchery!&nbsp; I was pleasantly surprised to discover taht there were still quite a few salmon on their &#8220;run&#8221;.<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">It was raining, but not enough to ruin the visit.&nbsp; <\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">Here is a picture of a salmon trying to jump the barrier.&nbsp; I think the other one is one that didn&#39;t make it.&nbsp; (Either that, or it&#39;s a bunch of leaves and debris.)<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/117\/275673633_930d1b9e98.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">The boys in their Northwest attire.&nbsp; Behind them you can see the grates that block the &#8220;ladder&#8221; into the hatchery.&nbsp; This is how they control how many salmon enter the pens for counting and spawning. (You can see a salmon jumping into the grate)<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/89\/275673640_3014d26bf5.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">Not the greatest shot, but all the dark spots are salmon in the creek.&nbsp; There are still so many!<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/108\/275673644_0b87b1597c.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">Here are all the boys watching the fish in their spawning pen. (A, R, J, C, and C).&nbsp; The two girls in our group are still babes in arms. (C and A).<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/91\/275673648_e6ce2c4807.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">A docent showing the kids a bag of salmon eggs.<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/90\/275673649_039056fb86.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">This day was one of their &#39;Spawning Days&#39;.&nbsp; This is where they harvest the eggs from the females, &#8220;milk&#8221; the males, kill them, then place them in bins.&nbsp; The salmon are placed through a metal detector to determine if they are a hatchery fish (they have a metal rod embedded in their nose and their adipose fin removed), or if they are wild.&nbsp; We only saw hatchery fish enter the tubs.&nbsp; The fish are placed on ice and sent to food banks.&nbsp; The salmon below are male, because they have hooked noses.<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/79\/275673651_b582d2eb27.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">Salmon Life Cycle<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/www.spaquaculture.com\/assets\/fishfarm\/life_cycle_salmon.gif\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">We learned that out of 8,000 eggs, only two survive to maturity.<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">Salmon are born in freshwater, swim to saltwater, where they grow up, then return to freshwater to spawn.<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">The lifespan on a salmon is 1 to 7 years, depending on the type.<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><STRONG>Hay, Dad!&nbsp; Does this picture spark any memories?<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/www.wildsalmon.org\/images\/9_2006__portland_rally\/rally-photo-002_300px.jpg\"><\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P style=\"MARGIN: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our homsechool group went on a field trip to the Issaquah salmon hatchery!&nbsp; I was pleasantly surprised to discover taht there were still quite a few salmon on their &#8220;run&#8221;.
