{"id":538229,"date":"2008-05-26T16:20:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-26T16:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2008\/05\/26\/how-to-write-well-susan-bradrick\/"},"modified":"2019-12-10T20:55:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T20:55:41","slug":"how-to-write-well-susan-bradrick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2008\/05\/26\/how-to-write-well-susan-bradrick\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Write Well &#8211; Susan Bradrick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Speaker at the Homeschool Conference)<\/p>\n<p>Writing is not like other academic subjects<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are no right or wrong answers<\/li>\n<li>It is not based on the memorization of facts<\/li>\n<li>It is a creative art<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>God&#8217;s creativity is different from ours.&nbsp; We need necessary ingredients:<\/p>\n<p>example: Baking a cake<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purpose and recipe<\/li>\n<li>form, design and style<\/li>\n<li>flavor, liquid, leavener, sweetener<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Content-Signifigant topic and purpose for writing.\n<ol>\n<li>Determine your audience\n<ol>\n<li>Have a real audience to whom you are writing<\/li>\n<li>Writing for the sake of writing and not for communicating is fruitless<\/li>\n<li>Why would you write something if no one is going to read it!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>State your purpose in one concise sentence&nbsp; (inform, cheer, persuade, instruct, appeal, prepare)<\/li>\n<li>Choose a general topic\n<ol>\n<li>choose a broad subject area, then limit in that area<\/li>\n<li>Conform to God&#8217;s righteouse standards<\/li>\n<li>part of your own experience or eprsonal story<\/li>\n<li>intended audience of interest<\/li>\n<li>God honoring; real ideas to real people<\/li>\n<li>Have kids write letters to relatives.&nbsp; Reports and research can come later.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.<\/p>\n<p>Ephesians 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable&mdash;if anything is excellent or praiseworthy&mdash;think about such things.<\/p>\n<ol>\n    <\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Limit your general topic\n<ol>\n<li>to fit purpose and desired elngth<\/li>\n<li>can be analyzed closely and carefully<\/li>\n<li>look through the eye of an artist to see what others do not see<\/li>\n<li>Narrow the topic to where you can describe it in depth<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Check attitudes about writing\n<ol>\n<li>Please the Lord<\/li>\n<li>Examine attitudes and motives for writing and make sure they are conformed to God&#8217;s Word.<\/li>\n<li>Simple letters are a great start for younger kids<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Psalm 121:3&nbsp; He will not let your foot slip&mdash;&nbsp;he who watches over you will not slumber;<\/p>\n<p>2. Style-choosing words and assembling<\/p>\n<p>Writing needs to be coached up to high school.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>1.&nbsp; Before writing: choose type that suits content (learn\/teach these in order)<\/p>\n<ol>\n    <\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Descriptive<\/li>\n<li>Narrative<\/li>\n<li>Informative<\/li>\n<li>Persuasive\/Argumentative (high school)<\/li>\n<li>Combination of these<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Writing fiction is not great for kids.&nbsp; let them write about real things that od puts in your life.<\/p>\n<p>In Middle and High School, have kids write Letters to the Editor.<\/p>\n<p>Reference: Author John Piper, &quot;A Godward Life&quot;<\/p>\n<p>2.&nbsp; Before writing: Choose the form<\/p>\n<ol>\n    <\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Letters, social notes, business letters<\/li>\n<li>book reports, research reports<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>3.&nbsp; During writing: Skillful and appropriate word choice <\/p>\n<ol>\n    <\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Concrete- choose words that are vivid and specific<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>ex. &#8216;The animal went away&#8217; &nbsp;vs. &#8216;The raging, snorting Brahma bull charged down the narrow cobblestone street.&#8217;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>2.&nbsp; Concise- saying as much as possible in the least amount possible<\/p>\n<p>ex: &#8216;the man in the western shirt, levis, chaps, and large-brimmed hat skilfully threw the long rope with a loop in the end of it over the head of the brown and white shaggy-headed steer&#8217;.&nbsp; vs. &#8216;The cowboy skilfully lassoed the Heifer steer.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>3. Graciousness-only say what&#8217;s necessary: be gracious indescription.&nbsp; Non offensive.<\/p>\n<ol>\n    <\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Ask: Will my writing bring glory to Christ?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>4.
