{"id":762167,"date":"2010-01-29T22:23:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-30T06:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2010\/01\/29\/field-trip-national-automobile-museum\/"},"modified":"2011-10-08T03:54:14","modified_gmt":"2011-10-08T03:54:14","slug":"field-trip-national-automobile-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2010\/01\/29\/field-trip-national-automobile-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Trip: National Automobile Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you ever find yourself in Reno with a couple of boys, definitely visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.automuseum.org\/\">National Automobile Musem<\/a>.&nbsp; It contains many cars from the private collection of Bill Harrah, the casino mogul.&nbsp; An avid collector of cars, Mr. Harrah was embarrassed to discover that while at a car show, he learned that one of his restored cars contained parts that were not authentic to the car.&nbsp; He decided to build a library containing the specs of all collector cars, and also build an assembly line in Sparks to facilitate the authentic restoration of collector vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>When he passed away, he left an estate of over 200 million dollars.&nbsp; This included something like 1200 cars.&nbsp; The cars were sold to the Holiday Inn chain, who planned on selling them.&nbsp; The people of Reno found out and were outraged.&nbsp; A non profit organization was founded and Holiday Inn donated 175 of Harrah&#8217;s cars to the organization.<\/p>\n<p>The museum is arranged in about four or five galleries, each dedicated to a particular time frame.&nbsp; I am providing you with just a small sampling of the cars, and had a hard time deciding which ones to post; the boys wanted me to take pictures of so many!<\/p>\n<p>The first exhibit we saw was dedicated to Alice Ramsey, the first woman to drive across America.&nbsp; She drove with three of her friends.&nbsp; I think it would be fun to recreate this trip some day with three of my girlfriends!&nbsp; Of course, it would be much easier today!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4066\/4311151503_4665f914d0.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe boys in front of the 1981 DeLorean,,,<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2756\/4311150969_1318121c0e.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Modeling in the Model &#8216;T&#8217;.&nbsp; This is the only car that you can touch.&nbsp; They had a bunch of hats and props for picture taking&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4067\/4311152005_b89ffa1be3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4064\/4311888568_d73bf7c350.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nMovie starlet, Mary Pickford&#8217;s car.&nbsp; Check out the rumble seat!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2739\/4311936514_08abb60e68.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nOther celebrity cars present include Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, John Wayne, John F. Kennedy, and a few more I can&#8217;t think of&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The 1921 Ford &quot;T&quot; Lamsteed Kampar.&nbsp; Seats six, sleeps four, predated the RV craze by 50 years&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4023\/4311936802_4cdedc9f10.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n1921 Rolls Royce&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4050\/4311937310_952a25067f.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n1938 Phantom Corsair.&nbsp; This car was the inspiration for the comic book illustration of the &#8216;Batmobile&#8217;.&nbsp; This museum actually used to have the real Batmobile, but when the owner moved from the area, he took it with him&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2723\/4311939582_dfb7b84b02.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nJames Dean&#8217;s car from the movie, &quot;Rebel without a Cause..&quot;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2775\/4311940018_84486d20bf.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe &quot;Shagmobile&quot; from &quot;Austin Powers&quot; The Spy Who Shagged Me&quot;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2800\/4311205099_1399378b76.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nFrom the movie, &quot;Easy come, Easy Go&quot; with Elvis Presley&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4035\/4311206485_7b1e7d5811.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nI bet you are humming the tune right now&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2738\/4311943576_822e2d99a3.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThis is the famous American &#8216;Thomas Flyer&#8217;, the winner of the Great Race of 1908!&nbsp; The race began in New York, across America, Asia and Europe and ending in Paris!&nbsp; Of the six cars that started, only three finished.&nbsp; Great story and would make for&nbsp;a good unit study.&nbsp; The museum has a whole exhibit dedicated to it.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4049\/4311960654_2e31460a44.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThis was &#8216;A&#8217;s favorite mobile.&nbsp; It is the 1960 Flying Caduceus, shown in the 2005 movie &quot;The World&#8217;s Fastest Indian&quot;, starring Anthony Hopkins.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4003\/4311224049_c6628010a5.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nCool race cars&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4039\/4311224311_c58ebeea24.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n&#8216;R&#8217;s favorite, The 2003 Mcmillin M\/D 1, an off road&nbsp;race car that had a video that kept &#8216;R&#8217; absobed for quite a while&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4054\/4311961470_721028a3e9.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nWe spent an easy two hours and could have spent more.&nbsp;
