{"id":782050,"date":"2010-05-08T22:43:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-09T06:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2010\/05\/08\/cain039s-crossing-renaissance-faire\/"},"modified":"2011-10-08T03:54:14","modified_gmt":"2011-10-08T03:54:14","slug":"cain039s-crossing-renaissance-faire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2010\/05\/08\/cain039s-crossing-renaissance-faire\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After delivering the baskets, I took the boys to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cainscrossing.org\/\">Cain&#8217;s Crossing Renaissance Faire.<\/a>\u00a0 A friend of mine found out that homeschool kids get in for free if you get a voucher ahead of time.\u00a0 They gave us a passport that had questions the kids were to ask at various stations.\u00a0 It was incredible educational; one of the most educational faires I have ever attended.<\/p>\n<p>I was amazed at the volume and quality of the costumes, and after spending five hours there, the kids were still begging me to stay!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4055\/4591085704_04ce67d47c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I did not let anyone know we would be there, and were pleasantly suprised to run into our friends, the McGuire family&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4062\/4590465861_3986a01d61.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3322\/4591085960_0f43e16b61.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gardner\/Vassallo family&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4035\/4590467315_fc6015e509.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and the Clark family!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4055\/4590470311_3bd2fcd4ff.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A couple of faeries handing out wishes&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4027\/4591086470_a857930c15.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of many processionals&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4064\/4591086846_5dddfee7ae.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nGod save the Queen!!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4072\/4590466941_5ba68e7cdf.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sword fights&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4053\/4591088160_77299df7a0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4023\/4591088840_42c03788b6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4030\/4590469111_8efce8b4a0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4063\/4590469239_175463e026.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4005\/4590469481_ac7caacb74.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Teaching the boys how to tie a square knot&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4049\/4591088476_7a3c765b8e.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nThe art of medieval medicine&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4061\/4591088928_00078f5b70.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4005\/4590468677_81b4a1b208.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Singing for the Queen&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4049\/4590468763_69fbf12e02.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This lovely woman taught the boys all about the various trades they could choose to apprentice for around the age of 12&#8230;then a journeyman&#8230;then a master&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4058\/4590468895_b842d83857.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0kind blacksmith taught &#8216;R&#8217; how to twist the iron into a spoon that we got to keep as a souvenir!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4072\/4590469555_18c4b3e092.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4055\/4590469641_c5db66d57c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4010\/4590469681_39fdf8ba40.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nAs we were walking past a group of people, someone asked us if we wanted to play a game.\u00a0 They boys said &#8216;yes&#8217;, so I said &#8216;yes&#8217;.\u00a0 Then, they assigned me team captain and wrote the number 10 on my hand (I still did not know what we were doing!)\u00a0 When I found out that it was a scavenger hunt and that we had 30 minutes to collect the items, I was tempted to back out, but they had added people to &#8220;my&#8221; team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rules:<br \/>\n-Do not mark the list in any way<br \/>\n-Do not tear up the list in any way<br \/>\n-No use of cell phones to retrieve information<br \/>\n-You can beg, borrow, barter, but not steal, to obtain an item.<\/p>\n<p>There were 10 teams.\u00a0 One big challenge to the list was that we did not know what many of the items were!\u00a0 We had to go up to random people and ask if they knew what an item was.\u00a0 I went up to those dressed as noblemen and women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I have to say, I had a fabulous team!\u00a0 I had two moms\u00a0who were competitive, three teen girls, 3 pre-teens, and about 5 kids.\u00a0 Everyone was totally into it, and that made it all the more fun.\u00a0 We divided the group into three smaller teams, and divvied up the items.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the list&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4044\/4591090222_43cebb025e.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n1. <strong>3 conifer lancettes<\/strong>.\u00a0 I am happy to say that I was able to figure this out\u00a0 on my own without help&#8230;<strong>pine needles!<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n2. <strong>Pirate Swag Silver\/Gold\/Bejeweled.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The teen girls and a few kids collected some trinkets.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong> Live Flying Bug.\u00a0 <\/strong>A preteen girl had collected a gnat right off the bat, but she lost it.\u00a0 She was able to catch a dragonfly, though!<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>A comfit.<\/strong>\u00a0 We had to ask around for the definition of this one.\u00a0 It is a sweet; a treat to eat.\u00a0 We were given some shortbread cookies as our comfit.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 <strong>Palindrome.<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the moms knew the definition to this.\u00a0 It is a word that is the same forwards and backwards.\u00a0 We asked around and came up with &#8216;refer&#8217;, and &#8216;bob&#8217;, but the best one we retrieved was: <strong>&#8220;Rats Live On No Evil Star&#8221;.<\/strong>6.\u00a0 <strong>Spyglass<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I borrowed a spyglass from a noblewoman.\u00a0 She actually had one in her basket.\u00a0 It was more like a magnifying glass, though, so we only got a half point for it, because it did not extend like a regular spyglass.<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 <strong>Prize from another game<\/strong>.\u00a0 This was brilliant!\u00a0 The teen girls had played a game earlier and their prize was a hug from a man.\u00a0 So, they tracked the man down and had him join us.\u00a0 He was the &#8220;prize&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 <strong>Quaff and Eructation.\u00a0 <\/strong>We had to ask around quite a bit for this one.\u00a0 We learned that a quaff is a mug, and and eructation is a belch!\u00a0 I borrowed a quaff from a noblewoman.\u00a0 Many of the kids were happy to provide the eructation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Checking\/judging our list&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4069\/4590469933_b3fe0134dc.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The remaining items were actually activities that they judged us on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 <strong>Grandest Gruning.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 We picked one person (one of the pre-teen boys)\u00a0to stand before the crowd, cover\u00a0his face with his hands, then remove\u00a0his hands and show the funniest face\u00a0his can make.\u00a0 We did not win this.<\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0 <strong>Fastest Cracker Whistled.\u00a0 <\/strong>We picked one person (another pre-teen boy), who ate two crackers and had to be the first person to whistle.\u00a0 <strong>HE WON!\u00a0 <\/strong>He&#8217;s the little cutie in the black&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4039\/4591090496_5452702967.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>11.\u00a0 <strong>Most Diabolical Laugh.\u00a0 <\/strong>We picked one of the other moms to laugh.\u00a0 We did not have time to listen to laughs, but she said she had a good one.\u00a0 She did.\u00a0 <strong>SHE WON!<\/strong>12.\u00a0 <strong>Best Sea Creature Impersonation.\u00a0 <\/strong>We decided it would be a good idea to make it a team effort, so we took four of the older girls and had them create an octopus.\u00a0 Up to this point, the activities were performed beginning with team 1 and working all the way to team 10.\u00a0 But, they threw us a curveball and said we not only had to use all the members on the team, but also start with our team 10!\u00a0 So, we quickly changed our creature into a jellyfish and got everyone involved by linking arms and kicking out.\u00a0 We did not win this one, and one of the moms was wanting to\u00a0protest this\u00a0because our group was so large, but I wanted to wait.\u00a0 I knew we were doing well, and it\u00a0just wasn&#8217;t worth creating that kind of tension.<\/p>\n<p>So, after tallying up the points, we learned that two teams had forfeited (they were no shows), and out of the remaining 8 teams, <strong>WE WON!!\u00a0 WOO HOO!!\u00a0 <\/strong>Our team, minus one girl&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4071\/4590470151_18ebf2b906.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nA little bit of archery&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4056\/4590470593_9f8d13ac8e.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nA little bit of fencing&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4044\/4590470743_0c34e18313.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nDrooling over the swords and shields&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4058\/4591091688_613e8fb575.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nMark my words&#8230;this will be an annual event for our family.\u00a0 We might even break down and invest in some costumes, if I can sweet talk our Lord of the Manor into it!:)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After delivering the baskets, I took the boys to Cain&#8217;s Crossing Renaissance Faire.\u00a0 A friend of mine found out that homeschool kids get in for free if you get a voucher ahead of time.\u00a0 They gave us a passport that had questions the kids were to ask at various stations.\u00a0 It was incredible educational;
