{"id":783002,"date":"2010-06-09T15:47:54","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T23:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/homeschoolblogger.com\/leigharev2\/?p=783002"},"modified":"2010-06-09T15:47:54","modified_gmt":"2010-06-09T23:47:54","slug":"california-redwoods-avenue-of-the-giants-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2010\/06\/09\/california-redwoods-avenue-of-the-giants-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"California Redwoods &#8211; Avenue of the Giants &#8211; SATURDAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bright and early Saturday morning, we psyched ourselves up to do the insane drive back up to Hwy 101.\u00a0 This was our &#8220;Avenue of the Giants&#8221; day!<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was to see the &#8220;Chimney Tree&#8221;.\u00a0..<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4020\/4683821385_90e4835cb5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the door entrance into the tree&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4046\/4683821453_0324a89a68.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking up while inside the tree&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4022\/4683821487_a1e66d3b45.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you enter the &#8220;Avenue of the Giants&#8221;, you can pick up an auto tour map, which shows different areas of interest to visit along the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop #1 F.K. Lang Grove<\/strong><br \/>\nThis was a small loop trail that was set aside to honor Franklin K. Lang , the Secretary of the interior under President Wilson.\u00a0 He was also the first volunteer President of the Save-the-Redwoods League.\u00a0 This is where we learned what poison oak looked like.\u00a0 It was everywhere.\u00a0 Fortunately, there were signs educating us on this and were able to avoid it.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4039\/4683823291_cbabcc6b52.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop #2 Bolling Grove<br \/>\n<\/strong>Dedicated to Colonel Raynal Bolling, an american officer who died in action during WW1.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4059\/4684453866_908ccc63de.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop #3 Visitor Center<br \/>\n<\/strong>Everyone was ready for a break to stretch the legs and eat a picnic lunch, so we stopped at the Visitors Center&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4015\/4683824255_3913dd4757.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inside the Center was an attractive historical display of the area, as well as an interactive area for the kids&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4004\/4683824345_2fe202900c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1265\/4683824421_1a528827d5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a man named Charles Kellogg who could replicate many bird sounds.\u00a0 He had albums made of them with music in the background.\u00a0 He also had a log hollowed out and made into a car.\u00a0 He traveled around, selling war bonds, and educating people on the Redwoods&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" and we almost missed it!\u00a0 We did not see the sign amongst the tall grasses.\u00a0 Reading the sign, we learned that the town of Weott (and Pepperwood, and what was left of Dyerville) were all destroyed when the Eel River flooded in 1964.\u00a0 It did not seem like it was that dramatic, until we turned and saw the post behind us&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1300\/4683825451_4d28782f7b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>See the top of the post??\u00a0 That is how high the water was!!\u00a0 Here is a drawing of the town of Weott as it used to be.\u00a0 It is kind of surreal for me to think how towns were wiped out as\u00a0recent as 1964&#8230;<br \/>\n<img alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop #5 Founders Grove<br \/>\n<\/strong>Big trees.\u00a0 Really big trees.\u00a0 We went on a nice hike that made us feel <em><strong>tiiiiiiiiny<\/strong><\/em>&#8230;..<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4052\/4684456294_84fe982272.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think this tree was the largest one I have ever seen.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t marked, so I can&#8217;t be certain, but it felt HUGE!\u00a0 (Do you see Dado?)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For Christie&#8230;long live Aloha&#8230;(no, I did not do that&#8230;)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4029\/4684458220_2c250a92c5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This ground cover was everywhere!\u00a0 &#8216;R&#8217; said he wanted to make it his blanket and spend the night there.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4042\/4684458662_2d21462e88.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop #6 Dyerville Overlook<\/strong><br \/>\nThe town of Dyerville was named for it&#8217;s oldest resident in 1890, Charles &#8220;Dad&#8221; Dyer. (BTW: Eel River was named because of the lamprey in the river.\u00a0 People thought they were eels.\u00a0 Homeschool assignment for you:\u00a0 Look up a graphic of the lamprey&#8230;)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4065\/4684458722_3b94a0a1c7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The final two stops were Chandler Grove and Drury-Chaney Grove.\u00a0 Both had small hikes we could have gone on, but it was getting late and we were ready to move on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4048\/4683829223_b0992a5b34.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>20 minutes north of the &#8220;Avenue of the Giants&#8221; is a town called Ferndale.\u00a0 We drove there to explore a little bit.\u00a0 Much of the downtown corridor and nearby homes are in the victorian style&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4029\/4684459834_595222582e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4014\/4683830029_dc784796b8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4043\/4683830605_bb3e3eb41d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The town had a very large cemetery.\u00a0 We did not explore it, but I find\u00a0old cemeteries fascinating&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4047\/4683829853_cf4772fed8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We all decided we were hungry and looked around for a place to eat.\u00a0 Nothing piqued our interest, so we opened our handy iPhone app, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanspoon.com\">urbanspoon.com<\/a>, and found the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eelriverbrewing.com\/\">Eel River Brewery<\/a>\u00a0in Fortuna.\u00a0 Aside from a couple of questionable t-shirts the staff wore, the meal was a delicious\u00a0end to an active day, and the service was friendly and professional.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4016\/4683831105_3e983bbafa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4037\/4684461160_86bb986c78.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4004\/4684461232_4faee6a5a3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bright and early Saturday morning, we psyched ourselves up to do the insane drive back up to Hwy 101.\u00a0 This was our &#8220;Avenue of the Giants&#8221; day!
