{"id":783019,"date":"2010-06-09T22:18:02","date_gmt":"2010-06-10T06:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/homeschoolblogger.com\/leigharev2\/?p=783019"},"modified":"2011-10-08T03:54:14","modified_gmt":"2011-10-08T03:54:14","slug":"effie-yeaw-nature-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centerdeep2.com\/riverbendprep\/2010\/06\/09\/effie-yeaw-nature-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Effie Yeaw Nature Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, my friend Tina and I, took our kids on a nature trail hike at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msa2.saccounty.net\/parks\/effieyeaw\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Effie Yeaw Nature Center<\/a>.\u00a0 They have a little demonstration village that shows how the Maidu Native Americans lived.<\/p>\n<p>The grinding rocks where the Maidu ground acorns into flour&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4023\/4687471668_7463257c17_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Huts made out of tule (a type of water reed)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4065\/4687471818_07a000e220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have to remind myself, I CHOSE to move here&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1265\/4687471940_f950974412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The nature center has an educational display with an assortment of animals that live in the area.\u00a0 There were snakes, lizards, a couple of owls, and a hawk.\u00a0 There was also an additional room with taxidermied animals and other items from Maidu life.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4044\/4686837693_860c807dec.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4070\/4686837613_2020bc3586.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4011\/4687472214_bcfed25ba9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4001\/4687472274_7d5ea35f88.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Grinding acorns&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4034\/4686837875_c0b3a99cbb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hitting the trail&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4035\/4687472530_4b99cc866b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tina&#8217;s younger son found this butterfly or moth chrysalis!\u00a0 Pretty amazing!!<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4044\/4686838117_e9d1d1b431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at a caterpillar&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4006\/4687472740_701ec5757e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Skipping rocks on the American river&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4021\/4686838269_4140226bca.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4010\/4687472836_b258d9dd54.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were actually two lizards on this log.\u00a0 One of them puffed himself up to scare us off&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4039\/4686838393_364348f088.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1306\/4686838481_088cacb0b9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Watching a tiny ant walk around with a piece of dried grass that was about thrre times the size of his body&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4050\/4687473026_b9147f2da1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A&#8217; and I spent some time trying to identify this caterpillar.\u00a0 We had no luck, so if anyone knows&#8230;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4044\/4686838579_f50e674677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw a rafter (group) of turkeys!!\u00a0 Interesting to note:\u00a0 We were able to get close enough to notice these hairlike things hanging off the chest of the turkey.\u00a0 I looked it up and found out that\u00a0\u00a0male turkeys grow a cluster of long, hairlike feathers from the center of its chest.\u00a0 This cluster is known as the turkey&#8217;s beard.
