Lisa Chan, wife of pastor Francis Chan, mother of five, and a beautiful woman with a passionate love for Jesus, spoke at our church for a women’s event.  Friends and I enjoyed the powerful talk together.

Dying to self v. catering/indulging.  Deny self.  Jesus says,”come to me, but be ready to give everything up to follow me.”
Take up your cross: Jesus cross was absolute submission to the Father when Jesus laid down his life.  Our cross is absolute submission to Christ as we lay down our lives.
Submission is a daily, moment by moment, decision.
We have the promise of the power of the Holy Spirit in us, but know that going against your flesh is painful and slow.
The world preaches the exact opposite – “you deserve to be treated a certain way”, “you deserve to be happy”, “you deserve this, that, the other”.  We keep our focus on self.
The cross is a beautiful representation of the joy set before us.
Immediate gratification v. the future joy that is coming.  Wait until you see what He has for you!
God is a rewarder.  Imagine 100 times more than your sacrifice.
Christ was motivated by the joy set before him.
Dead to self.  Alive in Christ.
It is in view of God’s mercy that we offer up our lives.
My interests do not direct my life any more. Jesus directs my life.  Surrender all worry, self righteousness, etc.
Ask God to change your desires.  You can’t do it on your own.
Pray over everything, the big and the small.  The enemy wants you not praying and asking God.
Stop speaking and believing lies. Recognize the lies.
Bumper sticker: “Don’t believe everything you think”.  Many times our thoughts are based on fear, pride, emotion.   We need to fill our mind with truth, so we can recognize the lies.
You can do anything Christ call you to.
Cultivate self control.  Exercise in self denial.  Set up training sessions for yourself to recognize when God sends His own training sessions.
Train yourself to be godly.
Without a goal, discipline is just self punishment.  We have to set our mind on the goal of reflecting God’s glory.
Don’t lose sight of it.
Train like an athlete.
Don’t dampen your light with stuff: possessions, credentials, etc.
You can eat of the plate of lies and eventually become sick or you can drink from the living water , from the God who made you and loves you and want to give you life, true life.
Stop resisting the work God wants to do in your life.
As we train ourselves in godliness, we will become more and more surrendered to God.
We have to fight spiritual battles with spiritual weapons: God’s Word, prayer, self control are a few…
Be faithful in the little things.  Start by surrendering something.
Tip the scale the other way with what goes into you.  What goes in will come back out.
