I bought some birdseed flowers and placed them in a shrub. It’s been such a joy watching the bird come and peck at them. I particularly enjoy the second picture, with the birds lining up on the fence rail, waiting patiently for their turn…

I have a friend who lives in Livermore, about 2 hours south of us. We decided to meet in Berkeley at the Tilden Regional Park. They have been there before, but this was a new adventure for us.
As we ascended the road that leads to the park, we were excited to discover these incredible views overlooking San Francisco!

The park has a little steam engine that tracks around a small section of the park. We took a little ride on the train…

…then had fun standing under it!!

A short drive from the train is a turn-of-the-century merry-go-round. The pictures do not bring justice to the incredible detail in artistry. The boys took a couple of rides on it, then we enjoyed a picnic lunch.

Another short drive to an animal petting zoo and the education center (closed)….

My friend brought a fabulous “frisbee horseshoe” game. The kids enjoyed flinging the horseshoes for distance instead of accuracy…

This fella has taken residence around our waterfall. He is a treat to see, once I realize he’s not a snake! He’s quite long; about a foot…

‘R’ is really into remote control toys right now. He received two cars for his birthday, and then with some of his birthday money, bought this cool new helicopter. ‘A’ bought one as well and both have had a great time mastering this harder-than-it-looks, hobby…

We felt the need for some from fresh air, to walk off the lunch, and headed for the water. We drove to Baker Beach and walked that for a while. Beautiful views. It was only after we returned home that I read that the north part of the beach is a nu%!st beach. Good thing we did not walk that far 🙂
Views from above the beach…

There is a restaurant called the Cliff House. It has a magnificent history and if you have a moment, follow the link to learn about it and see the old pictures. These are some pictures I took while standing below the Cliff House…

If we find ourselves in this area, it’s a given we will stop at Java Beach for some coffee and treats!

When my mother in law was a young, married, college graduate in the late 60’s, they lived in San Francisco. Date night every Friday night was in the same booth, with the same server, at the No.9 Fishermen’s Grotto. We decided to go there for lunch and enjoyed the fine service and yummy crab! You could tell this place had a “hay (hey) day”, and that day is over, but the attentive servers still wear suit jackets, and the food was delicious, albeit a bit pricey given the worn and dated interior.
There are two dining rooms; the one upstairs has a better view and a finer dining experience, the downstairs room is more casual. We ate upstairs because it looked like the downstairs was closed.

Happy, happy boy, sharing a whole crab with me!

This is the table Margaret and Al would eat at…

I had been to Chinatown and expected Japantown to be similar. I was surprised to discover how different it was, and not in a bad way. Japantown does not have the open markets, or the ornamentation on the buildings that Chinatown has, but the cool Japan centric shops are set within three or four small malls (we went into two).

I have always appreciated the Japanese sense of order…

A mural inside one of the malls…

I like the name os this place…

We went into a store that had a bunch of swords and weapons. We bought the boys each a wooden samurai sword. ‘R’ slept with his and unfortunately rolled over it and broke it…

We did not eat here, but it is a neat restaurant with little boats that go around the tables. When you want the dish, take it from the little boat…

An incredible bookstore, most of which is all in Japanese….

We learned that Japanese books are printed to open from the “back”, and the writing is up to down, right to left….

Whenever Grandma Margaret is in town, it’s a given we will head for San Francisco for a day of re-visiting old haunts, and exploring new ones. Uncle Paul joined us for the day as well.
We decided to go to Japantown first. Just outside of Japantown, we spotted a neat store to explore. So glad we did. It has totally changed how we view aquariums. Believe me when I say that these pictures come nowhere close to how beautiful these aquariums are.
