“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

The Bayside Homeschool Network celebrated Christmas with a party that rivaled all parties!  Such fun was had by all!

Our lovely master of ceremonies, Jeanette, going over the expected behavior for the day…

Singing carols with Tina…

Two of my precious friends, Catherine and Toni, and two of their girls…

Boys, boys, boys!

More precious friends with me… Tara and Rhonda.

The game room.  There were about three or four games in this room.  Here, the kids are writing their name on a present.  It is for a variation of “Pin the taill on the donkey”…This is “Place the present under the tree for Jesus birthday…”

For this game, the kids had to run in an relay, holding an ornament with a candy cane…

Presenting ‘BAYSIDE BEAUTIES’ – the stellar relay running team for the 2010 California International Marathon Relay!  Let to right: Tina, Carrie, me, Shanti.  Hmmmm….if I continue to surround myself by beautiful, petite women, will that make me one??

Two more sweet friends, Marisa and Christie…

…and our comedic talents…Jeanette and Stacy…

Masked Men

My boys take great joy in making masks.  During any given day, chances are good that one, or both, will be wearing a new creation around the house.  Sometimes they are heroes, sometimes thet are villains, sometimes they are trying to keep their faces warms from the ravages of the Sacramento blizzards.  I love being witness to their creative process.

A Personal Treasure

I want to share with you a personal treasure.  It is something I only see through the Christmas season, and something I will always cherish.

This is the Nativity set that belonged to my grandparents.  I remember rearranging the figures while at their house.  They were special to me as a child, and now, I get to share them with my boys.  I have it placed on the mantle, but am thinking about making it more accessible, so they can enjoy moving the figures around like I did.  I love this incredible visual reminder of the reason for Christmas.  I also love having this visual joy as a reminder for my grandmother, who has passed on.  (And someday, my Grandpa; although I suspect he’s going to outlive us all 🙂  I hope I inherited his healthy, longevity genes …Norwegian blood, I’m sure.)

By the way, this is the memory verse the boys and I are working on…

Isaiah 9:2-6 “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light, on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned…For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (This was written by the prophet Isaiah around 701BC…)

Tree Hunt 2010

Our friends, Chris and Katie, invited us to join them on their holiday tradition of going to Apple Hill for apple donuts, and then hunting for their Christmas tree.  I think there were five families total.

Another early morning for everyone.  We all caravaned up to Apple Hill( 45 minutes toward Tahoe in the Placerville-Camino area.) The boys were thrilled to discover small patches of snow on the ground.   It was soooooo cold!  First stop was High Hill Ranch for coffee and fresh made apple donuts…

A few of the boys playing Star Wars…

Playing by the fish pond…

Next stop, Smart’s Christmas Tree Farm in Camino.  I wish you could hear the shrieks of joy coming from our car when the boys saw a bunch of snow!  We were not geared up with gloves so I gave the lecture on how” if you choose to play in the snow, your hands will get cold, so I would suggest you keep your hands in your pocket.”  ‘R’ chimed in, saying, “That’s OK, mom, we will just get miserable instead.”

Our house is bigger than our last house, but I think this tree is a little too much…

Chris and Katie on the hunt…

Found it!!

David and Chris gearing up for hauling the tree to a main road for the tractor to pick it up.

Waiting for the tractor, David started up a snowfall fight with the boys…

The first candy cane of the season!

Our next stop was Boeger Winery for a picnic lunch.  One family did not hunt for a tree, so they went on ahead and saved three tables for us so we could all sit together.

This was so cool.  Brad and Vicki brought stew and apple cobbler, made in dutch ovens buried in briquets.  A perfect Autumn meal in the perfect setting….

Sandy read to us from “Jesus Calling”.

Our last stop was a drive through downtown Placerville to pick up gourmet pot pies at ZPie.

After the trek home, and a short nap, we rallied for a turkey leftover dinner, and then put up the tree!  It was neat this year, because the boys were interested in what every ornament meant.  We kept the lights on overnight and let the boys sleep beneath the tree.

Early morning light…

Our first official holiday in our new house!  We were grateful for a  house full of the Holy Spirit, good friends, and blessed conversation.

The morning started with me rousing the boys out of bed.  They really wanted to see the organs taken out of the turkey.  Our friend Crystal was making the turkey, so I dropped the boys off at 8am at her house, then met up with my friend Elyse to run the Roseville Turkey Trot 5k.  I am stunned to discover that I ran it in 32:32, a huge leap from past times.  This gives me hope for the CIM Relay next week.

Elyse set the table.  It turned out gorgeous!!

“Auntie Crystal” made the turkey and the boys were so happy that they each got their own drumstick. 🙂  They also decided to wear their pilgrim and indian costumes we had left over from our 4th of July celebration…

Our loved guests…Left of David, our friend Anton.  His wife Cynthia was supposed to join us but she came down with a migraine.  Our good friends Crystal and Eric.    Our friend and yardcare man, Mike.  Our friend, Elyse.  Our new friend through Crystal and Eric, Jared.  This young man piled up a plate after already eating a Thanksgiving dinner at a different home!  Oh, the metabolism of youth!

After dinner, the boys wanted to put on a play for us.  Here we are gathering for the play.  Our friends, Shirley and Q, stopped by with a homemade sweet potato pie that Q made.  DELICIOUS!

The play was so cute.  It was about five minutes long.  ‘A’ talked about the pilgrims coming over on the Mayflower, and then ‘R’ came in to say that he was “Chief Massaquoi” (or something like that), and that he was going to have Squanto come in “two sunrises” to help the Pilgrims.  ‘R’ then showed “A’ how to fish with a net (using Daddy’s sweatshirt), then how to plant corn and laying the fish on top, “to make the corn taste better” 🙂  They then gathered for a feast, and ‘A’ closed by saying that it was Abraham Lincoln who declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.

We divvied up the leftovers, but will still be eating turkey for a long time!  LOVE IT!!

Our precious small group decided that we would all pitch in and serve at a Sacramento church food drive.  The room was full of food and volunteers, all organized to fill bags for a holiday dinner for the needy.

‘R’ and I stationed ourselves at the stuffing table.  ‘R’ placed a stuffing boxes into the bags that were brought around by the other volunteers…

David and ‘A’ walked around and filled bags with food…

It was a fun family project and something we plan on doing again for Christmas.

Autumn brings shorter days, falling leaves, and spawning salmon!  Our homeschool network went on a field trip to learn about the life cycle of the salmon at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery.

We saw this bird and would like to know what it is.  So far, I have had no luck in identifying it.  Any bird lovers out there who can help?  (Update: My Dad is the winner with “Osprey”)

We were able to watch the process of harvesting and fetilizing salmon eggs:

  1. The salmon in a holding pen were mildly shocked to keep them from thrashing too much
  2. The holding pen is raised and a man separates the males from the females.
  3. All the fish are clubbed and the females main artery is cut to let all the blood out.
  4. Once all the blood has been removed, the abdomen is split open and all the eggs are removed.  A salmon makes about 5000 eggs!
  5. The eggs are placed in a small tub and the male salmon is “milked” over the eggs.  A little river water is added and swirled around.  All of the eggs are fertilized withing 20 seconds.
  6. This hatchery has a 98% success rate of hatching and releasing salmon.

Feeding the fish.

Random Cute Stuff

‘A’ showed me his rendition of Santa and his reindeer.  I couldn’t resist…

Then, ‘R’ showed me his own creation, “Yoda in a Hot Tub”…

Weekend with Heidi

One of my WA BFFs, Heidi, called me one day to say that she’s heading south for a visit!  What to do…what to do…

She was on a standby ticket and had hoped to get in late Thursday night, but that did not happen.  She did, however, make the first flight out on Friday.  I picked her up at the airport and after a little tour of our new digs, went to SF Boudin for lunch.  We met up with a wonderful young woman named Kelly.  She and her husband worked for our WA state church after we had moved.  They recently moved this area and our mutual friends keep telling both of us that we needed to meet each other.  Since Heidi is friends with Kelly, this seemed a good time to meet.

Heidi and Kelly

The three of us…’A’ took the shot…

After visiting a while, we parted ways and went back to our place.  We dropped the boys off at a “Nerf Gun” birthday party, then Heidi and I took off on a road trip!

First stop….Chik Fil A.  We had to fuel up for the long (one hour) trip…

We made it to Napa as the sun was setting…

We stopped at the CAbi Outlet Store, where there was a BOGO free deal!  Needless to say, I scored….

The Peju winery hosted an open house.  We spent a lovely evening there, with a sampling of all their wines and yummy appetizers.

After the open house, we headed for our hotel. I used Google maps to get us there.  It took us on the craziest, “windeyest”, “over the river and through the woodsiest” road!  We were the only ones on this road, except for the Porsche who sped up behind us and impatiently waited for me to find a place to pull over so he could fly past.

We checked into our adorable historical boutique hotel, The Sonoma Hotel

It was getting late and we were tired.  Especially Heidi.  She’d been up since 4am.  So, we called it a night and went to bed.

Here’s where the “fun” begins…I broke out in a big case of hives and my whole body was itching like crazy, especially the soles of my feet and the palms of my hands.  I thought I was going crazy!  However, as bad as I was, it was nowhere near as bad as poor Heidi.  She was sick from about 2am to 6am .  It has been something that she has had inconsistently over the past few weeks (she is being tested for gallbladder issues now).  Anyway, the next morning looked promising , but she had to take it easy.

I was up early, so I walked through downtown Sonoma to pick up some ginger ale for Heidi.  This is a picture of one of the main streets of Sonoma, our hotel being on the left….

We decided to drive around Sonoma Valley a bit, and enjoy the lovely colors of a quiet morning…

We stopped by a neat little store that makes homemade chocolate truffles.  Wine Country Chocolates  The owner/chocolatier, had just placed two sauce like samples out.  They were still warm!  These samples were what goes inside the truffles.  One was “pumpkin pie”, and I don’t recall the other.  Definitely delicious chocolate!
The chocolate machine.  It would have been more impressive on video, but I can’t figure out how to make video work with this new format…

First winery stop of the day: Kunde Family Estate.  My friend, Betsy, had suggested I check out their reserved tasting.

We arrived just in time to go on a free, 20 minute wine cave tour.  The host packed a ton of information in such a limited time.  It was a real treat.

At the end of one of the wine caves is about five stairsteps leading to a lovely long table.  This is used for parties, dinners, and other events.  At the end is a small “stage” and a decorative backdrop that is a piece of the existing earth to show what the land is like.

This is a view of the reserved tasting area. You sit down at the tasting and try select wines, accompanied with a chocolate at the end.

This is the view from the reserved area, looking at the regular tasting bar…

I love the rolling hills of Sonoma Valley, with their patchwork quilt of vineyard colors…

We found some fields of old vine zinfandel.  Some of these vines are still producing grapes and they are over 125 years old!

Next stop: Imagery Estate Winery.  This place was hopping.  It had a festive party atmosphere compared to the casual and mellow of Kunde.  I should have taken a picture of the tasting room for you to get a sense of what was up, but I just took one pictue the the outside picnic tables…

I took these pictures of my cell phone’s weather app at the same time of day.  Heidi called Craig to check and see if it was really that cold.  He said it was warmer by 15-20 degrees.  I think he’s in denial.

We drove back to downtown Sonoma and shopped a little while waiting for our table for lunch.  Heidi bought us a housewarming gift at a kitchen shop.  It’s a fabulous picnic kit for four.  What I love about it is that it is more compact than some other kits I have seen before.  It is perfect for us!  Thanks Heidi, you complete me…

We had a delicious lunch at the Girl and the Fig.  I ordered their du jour, a three course meal.  The soup was an incredible roasted chestnut and prosciutto soup.  I could eat that for the rest of my life and be happy.  The second course was a chicken pot pie with puff pastry.  YUM!  My final course was a choice between a dessert or cheese plate.  I went for the cheese plate.  There was a green tomato marmalade on the plat that was perfect with the feta.  SO good!!

Walking back to our car, we caught this comical sight….this man is walking his shetland pony through town…

Our final stop on our whirlwind Sonoma tour was to Jacuzzi Family Vineyards.  This family were the actual inventors of the Jacuzzi!  I love their logo.  This property is a great find for Italian varietals.  The tasting is complimentary, which is a nice bonus.  They also have a shop called The Olive Press, where they make their own olive oil.

King Triton is wearing sunglasses.  I can’t tell if that adds or detracts from this photo… 🙂

We left Sonoma in the wake of this gorgeous sunset…

Two words, Heidi: DO OVER

Camping Theme Party

The boys were invited to a birthday party for one of their friends.  The theme was camping.  They did an amazing job orchestrating a fun evening for everyone!

The yard was decorated with little camping areas.  Everyone stayed outside for the whole event; an excellent idea when you have about 10 boys around!  The boys were told to come dressed as a camper.  ‘R’ wanted me to make his face look dirty, so I smudged brown eyeliner on their faces.

Two of the dads were the “camp counselors”.   The first activity was to decorate a beige bandana they received, and also decorate an empty soup can with camping stickers.  Inside the can, they received a camping activity booklet, and a pencil.  The boys were to keep this can with them for the rest of the evening.  I think they did one of the booklet activities as well.

The boys were led from the yard to a community green space near home.   ‘K’s dad talked about fire safety, then showed them how to use a flintstone to begin a fire.  The kids were divided into two rows and had a relay race to place river rock in a circle, then place sticks inside the rock circle.  “Amazingly”,  the relay ended in a tie, and all the kids received a magnifying glass to add to their cans.

After the race, they went on a “hike” into a group of redwoods. ‘K’s dad taught them about redwoods, how to estimate how much wood can be harvested from one tree, and how to estimate how tall the tree is. Then, they went on a scavenger hunt from the booklet and had to find items that were only found in nature.

Post hunt, they sat in a circle and learned  about how to tell direction based on the sun, and the stars.  They all received a toy compass to add to their can.

The last activity among the redwoods, was a hunt for little plastic frogs, snakes, and lizards to place in their can.  Then, the trek back to the house for a yummy dinner of hot dogs, chips, carrots, and apples…

My friend made an incredible cake that looked like a campsite, with grass, trees, and a little tent.  Her sons name was on it and she asked that none of his personal info be placed on the blog, so I am not posting the cake.  But trust me when I say it is amazing!

What’s camping without s’mores!  The second dessert….

My boy mom friends: Leslie, Colleen, Stacy, and Elyse

The evening ended with the kids receiving little flashlights that attach to their belt loops.  They went to the front yard and played flashlight tag.  My boys discovered a new way to entertain themselves with the flashlight…

Such a fun party!
