One of my goals in raising my boys is that they will be comfortable in the kitchen.  To help reach this goal, I try to have them each create a menu (Ideally in theory, but not always in fact) one night a week.  They decide what they want to make, and them make the meal with minimal assistance from me.  I caught this picture because I thought it was so cute.  ‘A’ made a lasagne and was patiently watching it cook!  Of course, it was the BEST LASAGNE EVER!!  (‘R’ created THE BEST PIZZA EVER later that week)…

Trick or Treat!

DH’ s back was bothering him, so he stayed home to dole out the candy.  I took the boys out through our neighborhood.  It was a delightfully warm night and they were so excited!  They pretty much ran door to door nonstop, until their little feet could take no more.  It was pretty funny to see parents shuttling their kids around on golf carts.  (well, we do live on a golf course after all…).  It was also a night during the World Series, so there were many garages converted into “man caves”, with the garage door up, the BBQ going, and big screen TV blaring.  You could see many dads trying to keep their eyes averted so they could watch the game after taking their kids out.

Yesterday, it rained all morning.  But, it cleared up in the afternoon, and this morning was gorgeous!  A perfect day for participating in the 2010 Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run!

I left the house alone and ran the 5k.  This included about seven obstacles and some major hills.  I was able to complete all but one of the obstacles, and was able to run the smaller hills, but walked the bigger ones.

Then, David brought the boys a few hours later.  They were able to each participate in a run targeting their ages.  ‘R’ ran a 100 yard dash, and I was required to run with him.  It had three obstacles: crawling under a canopy, crossing a grounded balance beam, climbing over a low fence, and doing the mud crawl…

‘A’ did an excellent job, running the whole ONE MILE and  did all of his obstacles.  He said it was hard, but he stuck with it, and was excited to pass many of the kids who has started in a sprint and burned out.  ‘A’ paced himself for a strong finish.  He was also excited because this was the first run where he had a timing chip like the big guns!

Science: More Magnets

For this experiment, we taped a magent to the top of a toy car and the boys used another magnet to propel the car forward!  They loved this and had fun running them off the counters…

Our homeschool group took this delightful autumn field trip to Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm.  We had such a large turnout, we ended up taking two time slots for the hayrides!

Simple Truths

I often walk by some signs that are up in the Children’s Ministry at our church.  I glance, but don’t really think about them.  A few days ago, after dropping off the boys in their class, I walked by the signs again, but this time, upon reading, them each one jump out as a profound truth.  I spent the morning rolling these simple truths around in my head…

I need to make the wise choice.  In everything.  I need to discern what is the wise choice….in parenting…in friendships…in my marriage…in my health…even if the wise choice might not be the funnest or giving in to temptations, I need to grow up and take responsibility, and make wise choices.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10) (Fear: Often defined as awe-filled respect…)

I should treat others the way I want to be treated.  I am often convicted when I hear the boys speak shortly to each other, and I know they get that from me because that is how I sometimes speak to them.  I could make excuses, but reality is, they do not deserve to be spoken in a negative, impatient tone.  No one does.  I would not think to speak to my friends or their children in this manner, so why is it OK with my kids?  It’s not.

“Do to others as you would have them do to you…” Matthew 7:12

I can trust God no matter what.  Amen.  As I grow to love him all the more, I am grateful for my secular past, because now I can know truth and no longer question it, or when I do question it, it’s for understanding while believing, not wrestling in disbelief.  I have wrestled with faith and issues of faith for many years, and the , in His great patience and mercy, has revealed enough to me to know that He is who He says He is, and all who SEEK, BELIEVE, and OBEY Him, will come to harvest the fruit of the Holy Spirit:  Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, Faithfulness, and Self Control.

“Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all yours ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

The kids had a party in their class on Thursday.  They were excited to get to wear their costumes BEFORE Halloween!  ‘R’ is Luigi, one of the Mario Brothers, ‘A’ is Spiderman, and this is their friend, ‘I’, who is an alligator, but he would not wear his head!

Backyard Guest

This little guy has been hanging around.  He crawled up ‘R’s neck.  ‘R’ loves sitting and watching nature quietly.  It takes all of ‘A’s willpower to not pull his hand back when an insect is placed on it.
