Grandma Margaret joined us for a week!  We enjoyed our time at home, but also got a chance to get out for a couple of day trips.  Once such trip was to San Francisco.  We dropped Margaret off at a friend’s house (they have known each other since college), and we took the boys to Fisherman’s Wharf to one of our favorite restaurants, The Franciscan, for lunch.

The restaurant has binoculars at the table.  You can see the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz from the window…

After lunch, we drove up to Coit Tower.  We took the aged elevator up to the top to enjoy the sweeping views of San Francisco…

‘A’ wanted us to act like we were getting arrested…(Alcatraz is in the background…)

After Coit Tower, we decided to drive to Lombard Street, and drive down the crookedest street in San Francisco.

We spent the rest of the afternoon playing at Ocean Beach.  The weather was delightful; not too hot or cold.

Running from the waves…

The boys found a furry friend and held a digging party…

Sandy fun…

Rolling down the sand dunes…

It was time for dinner, and we knew we wanted Chinese, but did not know where to go.  So, we pulled out our trusty iPhone app, Urbanspoon.  We entered the neighborhood we were in (Richmond), Chinese,  and $$.  Up popped Burma Superstar.  There were quite a few positive reviews, so we decided to check it out.  I am so glad we did!  It is actually Burmese food; a combination of Chinese, Thai, and Laos.  Apparently two of their dishes were recently showcased on one of the Rachel Ray shows.

After dinner, we drove to the new apartment of David’s brother Paul and girlfriend, Shannon.  Paul had picked up Grandma Margaret and spent the afternoon/evening with her.  After we visited for a while, we headed for home.  It was a full, fun packed day!

Cosumnes River Preserve is located a little less than an hour drive from us.  This last Saturday, I took the boys on a ‘photo walk’, hosted by the property.  Volunteer naturalist Jim took us on a 2 mile walk, taking in a small part of the preserve…

Getting ready to take some pictures!

First bird spotted…a hummingbird!

Second animal spotted…a little bush rabbit!

Our host, Jim, showing us an oak gall.

Oak galls are very common in this area, but something I have never seen in Washington.   The boys like to use them as “grenades”.   The growths, called “galls,” are  the result of a type of wasp.  The wasp pierces a tree with its egg laying device and deposits an egg inside the plant tissue. Fluids deposited with the egg cause the plant cell multiplication process to begin.   The larva develops within a cavity inside the gall, feeding on material produced.   At maturity, the larva transforms into a pupa, and later becomes an adult that chews its way out of the gall.  By causing the tree to form a gall, the wasp has provided food and shelter for its offspring.

The oak galls still on the tree…

A different kind of oak gall.  It looks like a bright red chocolate chip!

Cattails…

The boys had toggled between cameras and binoculars…

While on the trail, we came across a small vertical trench that ran across both sides of the trail.  Turns out this is an otter slide.  Otters and beavers use this as a pathway…

Observing an egret feather…

A crawdad claw…

Wild grapes;  apparently an invasive plant in this area…

One of many wood duck boxes.  Ducks that actually nest in trees!

Some cool fungus…

Tracking birds in flight…

A huge turkey vulture…

Exploring the Visitors Center…

Boys Town

Boys Town ran rappant this past week!  The boys went to their friend’s house for a summer party; a full day and night of Nerf Wars, swimming, BBQ, etc.

‘G’ lives on the family farm, and the kids enjoyed making forts on the hay bales…her are the first round of kids.  About six more came after I left…

Can you handle the cuteness?

Pictures from their lovely farm.  Located in Lincoln, about fifteen minutes from our place, they have cows/steers  and chickens,
and show a prize bull…

My attempts at photography does not do justice to the massiveness of this gorgeous bull!  He is amazing!!

Taking a break from Nerf Wars…

Thank you Janet for hosting such a great time for our boys!

Jousting!

I was in the other room when I heard ‘A’ yell to ‘R’, “LET’S JOUST”!!  When I went to see what that was all about, I found the boys in their PJs, with their hobby horses (custom made for them by my talented friend, Christie), and their light sabers, jousting!!  I had to get them outside for some picture time…it was too precious to pass up…

Standing guard…

Outdoor Movie Night

Our friends, Chris and Katie, invited our small group over for a fun night of watching ‘Up’ in their backyard.  It was a bit cool that night, atypical for this time of year, but it did not dissuade us.  Some jackets and blankets all around and we were set!

Chris and Katie have a beautiful home and yard.  In the front yard, there is an olive tree next to a fountain.  The sun was hitting it just right and I tried to get some shots to captue its beauty.  The pictures do not do justice to what I witnessed…

This was so cute!!  Their dog, Simba, would stand or sit right in front of the screen whenever the dogs were on the screen; especially the dog, “Dug”.  You kind of had to be there to get the full extent of doggie cuteness…

Great girls and (hopefully) future sitters…’A’, ‘B’, and ‘K’…

Catherine and Rob.  This wonderful couple have been together since their sophomore year in high school!

Curling up around the fire pit…

…my new favorite home decor store!  Tons of exterior and interior home good items…

Clover Valley Park

There is a park near our house that we had not been to yet.  It has a nice little creek along the border.  Nice place to cool off!

Pastor Mark Visits

One of our past pastors and friend was in our area for a wedding.  We were able to spend about  an hour with him catching up before he embarked on a whirlwind weekend.  It was great to visit with him!

The boys took the CAT a few weeks ago.  ‘A’ took the one for first grade, and ‘R’ took the one for Kindergarten.  We just received the results.    I am happy with the results overall.  It’s important to note that this test measures against all the students who took the test nationally, so the result is not percentage of how many they got right, but what their standing is among their peers…

‘A’/First Grade

Vocabulary     20 out of 20 correct  Percentile: 91  Stanine: 8
Comprehension  20 out of 20 correct  Percentile 96 Stanine: 9
Language Expression  20 out of 20 correct  Percentile: 90  Stanine: 8
Math computation 17 out of 20 correct Percentile: 57  Stanine: 5
Concepts & Application 18 out of 20 correct Percentile: 82 Stanine: 7
Reading Total: 40 out of 40 correct Percentile: 95 Stanine: 8
Mathematice total: 35 our of 40 correct Percentile: 69 Stanine: 6

The percentile figure means that the student scored as well as or better than that percentage of students who took the test nationally.  Stanine indicates a relative standing also: 1, 2, and 3 reflect below average performance; 4, 5, and 6 are considered average; 7, 8, and 9 are above average.

‘R’/Kindergarten
Visual Recognition 24 out of 24 correct Percentile: 86 Stanine: 7
Sound Recognition 19 out of 20 correct Percentile: 91 Stanine: 8
Vocabulary 20 out of 20 correct Percentile: 83 Stanine: 7
Comprehension 20 out of 22 correct Percentile: 72 Stanine: 6
Language Expression: 20 out of 20 correct Percentile: 80 Stanine: 7
Concept and Application: 19 out of 20 correct Percentile: 94 Stanine: 8
Reading Total 40 out of 42 correct Percentile: 81 Stanine: 7
No math for K

I have been running (I use this term loosely) 5k’s on and off for many years.  We decided it would be a good time to introduce the kids to the joys of organized runs.  So, we went into “training” two weeks ago, and began running as a family every night at 9pm.  This is a good time because it is not too hot, and it sets the kids up well for a good night sleep.  We began by running as far as we could, for as long as we could.  At the beginning, this was about a third of a mile before we had to walk.  Now, the boys can run one mile in about 13 minutes!  I will run an additional mile to 1.5 miles after on the treadmill.

Today, we ran in the Susan B. Anthony 5k!  David ran with the boys in the kids half mile.  They both ran the whole way!  I did the 5k and was able to “run” it in 41 minutes.  After not having ran for a while, I am definitely back at square one.

Warming up with some one handed push ups.  ‘A’ saw someone doing this once and thinks it’s the coolest thing…

Starting out…

‘A’ making a strong finish.  You can see David and ‘R’ in the background…

‘R’ also finishing strong!

So proud of their medals…

Proud Papa…

Proud Mama!
