Cal State Fair 2010

Every year I smile over how much the kids have grown.  Every year they get to add a few more rides to their repertoire, and cover a little more ground…

Riding high in one of the rides…

This was a fun attraction.  You crawl into a big, plastic ball and try to run on water…think hamster ball on steroids.

Mutton busting….fun to watch, but the kids wanted nothing to do with it…

What’s wrong with this picture?  (Hint: it’s not churros…)

As the sun dropped, the weather became a perfect summer evening…

I think this is cute of kids waiting patiently for their turn…

Once a month, our church small group hosts a lunch for homeless in Sacramento.  We plan the menu, buy the food, prepare and serve for about 80 people.  Typically, we do this out of the Broderick Center, a day shelter that has a large room and kitchen.  Sadly, in early July, a disgruntled homeless person burned the shelter down and detroyed three vans that were used to transport special needs adults to their jobs.

We  decided to continue to serve at the place where most live, along the river.  There is park where they typically congregate.  So, we are now creating a traditional BBQ lunch, with hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, beans, etc.

I have to say, I really enjoy serving there instead.  At the center, everyone kind of  “eat it and beat it”, but at the park, they would hang around and we were able to talk a while.  I had the sense that we were at their place, and they were more comfortable there.  One of the men told me he felt like he was participating in a family picnic.  A few of the women took the time to compliment us on how we were raising our kids.

Kids Choir Camp

The boys enjoyed a week of singing and prepping for a play called, “Everyday Heroes”.  They were a part of the choir and sang along with hand motions.  It was fun to watch.  I was a proud mama!

There were two sets of risers, and one group of kids on each side of the stage.  Obviously, I sat as close to the kids as possible…

Summer Update

I have misplaced my battery charger for my camera, so I have not really had anything to update here.  I have ordered another one, so hopefully that will change.  Other than that, here is what going on in our neck of the woods:

  • The weather has been delightful.  Not too hot, not too cold.  It has been typically a high in the low 90’s.  The past few days have been in the 80’s.
  • We are all in “training” for an upcoming 5k fun run.  We are jogging every night.  The boys are up to one mile.  I jog additionally after for another 1 to 1.5 miles.
  • We are house hunting!  We are thinking about placing an offer on a house that we saw today.  It’s actually located on a golf course!  We are kind of going between two houses, and there are still so many we have not seen!  We will decide tomorrow.
  • The boys took the CAT (California Achievement Test) on Monday.  I got to look it over before submitting and am looking forward to the results.  It was nice to be able to see exactly what they got right and what we still need to work on.  But, overall, I am happy with how both of them did.
  • David’s mom is coming down at the end of the month for a week.  We are looking forward to having her down.  I hope we will get to make a day trip to San Francisco!
  • I am serving this year with our homeschool network in two areas; yearbook and service outreach.  I am really looking forward to both areas.

OK, I think that’s about it for now.  Hopefully the next update will have pictures!

What better way than to while away a summer day swiming with friends?  A group of us spent an afternoon on Lake Natomas!
We are very fortunate to have access to a beach that is maintained by the Sac State Aquatic Center.  You can rent kayaks, canoes, catamarans, aquacycles, etc. , or you can just enjoy their beach for free.  They also loan out life jackets.

There is a small arm of the lake where you can swim to the other side.  The other side is a state park.  The kids spent most of their time over there, within eyesight of the moms, yet oh – so far away!

Some of our wonderful group…

Heather and three of her four…(one was already on the other side of the water!)

‘A’ and ‘R’ getting acclimated…

Rhonda and Kelly.  They think I took it too close :).  I think it turned out great!!

The three amigos heading out…

The lake contains freshwater clams.  I never knew these existed.  Here are some of the kids showing off their collection…

Chllin’ with friends on the other side…

Blue lips mean nothing to this crew.  It’s just a color….

Science: More Magnets

Officers ‘A’ and ‘R’  enjoyed experiments with magnets again.

In this experiment, the boys taped a magnet to a pencil, and placed it under a variety of materials with three paper clips placed on top.  they recorded which materials the magnetic force was able to pass through and engage the clips…

For this experiment, the boys placed a thumbtack to the bottom of a cork, and made little “boats”.  They used magnets beneath the tray to maneuver the boats floating in water…

The time had come for another girl’s night out, and we carried over the French countryside theme!  Betsy opened her beautiful home and the evening was spent laughing, dining on fabulous cuisine, and the topper, dancing for the rest of the evening, (well, except for dipping our toes in the pool, and Leslie and Christie swimming fully clothed….)

Jodi and Betsy!

Ginger, Heather, Jodi, Kelly, Leslie (and Colleen’s backside…)

Christie, Tara, Katie…

The amazing spread!

Me and Megan…

I hope someone got better dance shots.  Mine did not make the cut.  Such a fun night!!  Thanks ladies 🙂

Cousin Terry Visits

David’s business partner, and our cousin, Terry, spent a few nights with us.  Most of the time was spent in business, but we carved out a few fun times…

We went to the Fountains mall for dinner at Tres Agaves.  It looked like someone had placed dry ice in the main fountain.  We learned that it’s a mister!

‘A’ and Terry…

La familia…

On Thursday nights, Tres Agaves hosts a terrific Mariachi band!

This photo is a shout out to my mama.  She worked for F&N for many years.  We found this truck parked in an old gas station by SeaTac…

We spent our last night of our road trip at one of our favorite places, McMenamin’s Edgefield, just outside of Portland, OR.  It’s a fun, unique escape.  I have written about this place before.  You are welcome to run a ‘search’ if you want more info on it.

The door to our room.  Calbert Mcduff was an African American orderly when this place was an home for the elderly.  No one sat with him on his first day, but his personality won them over.  He worked for the home for over 30 years until his retirement.

Strolling the grounds…

The soaking pool.  102 degrees of delight.  The item behind the boys are showers that are activated by pulling a chain…

Dinner at the Black Rabbit.  The boys did not like the mac and cheese.  Too gourmet…
