I was getting the boys things together for swim lessons, when the boys started shrieking at the top of their lungs…

"Mom, come quick, you have to see this!"  <Insert extreme excitement>

"You won’t believe it…HURRY!" <Dragging me to the window>

<Shriek, shriek, yells, screams>

I run to see what all the fuss is about, and yep, there it was,  sunshine…only for a moment, but it was there.

DH ran out of his office to see who won the Publisher’s Clearinghouse, whatever else would be such a cause for such commotion.

After he found out, all he said was…

"We need to move to Maui…"

My cousin just bought a house, so this is a great time to pass on some items from the kitchen.

I am giving ( or donating if she does not want them) her some glassware, a glass pitcher, some entertaining platters, and a big mixing bowl.

Our homeschool co-op was feeling a little cabin fever and decided to go on a field trip, instead of hosting Tuesday School at someone’s home.  So, we went to Kids Quest Children’s Museum in Bellevue.  You can see the group pictures at our Co-op Blog, Roots and Wings.

Here are some personal pictures of A and R…

Making music with water…

Here is ‘A’ speaking to ‘R’  located in a tree house in a different part of the museum!

‘R’s favorite place to be…inside the cab of a Peterbilt truck!

Checking out bird calls…

Our surfer in training…timing his balance…

Testing the benefits of pulleys…

"yellow and blue make green!"

No museum trip is complete without visting Petco next door to see the reptiles!

Life Skills 101

I love this age.  The kids jump at the chance to help me with the household chores.  I pray that this will always be the case.  Here they are cleaning the sink…

Yes, it takes four times longer than if I did it, but as adults, they will know how to clean the sink…

All children need a laptop. Not a computer, but a human laptop. Moms, Dads, Grannies and Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles – someone to hold them, read to them, teach them. Loved ones who will embrace them and pass on the experience, rituals and knowledge of a hundred previous generations. Loved ones who will pass to the next generation their expectations of them, their hopes, and their dreams.

I bought the book, "Once a Month Cooking" by Mimi Wilson and Mary Beth Lagerborg, and completed one month of cooking yesterday.  Here is how it breaks down:

-Wednesday: I looked over the book and got the general idea of what needed to be done.  Made a plan.
-Thursday: Shopping, part 1.  It took about 1.5 hours.
-Friday: Shopping, part 2.  1.5 hours, pre-prep: 2 hours.
-Saturday: 12 hours making 27 meals, all different (3 ham dishes, 10 chicken, 12 beef dishes, 1 fish, 1 vegetarian)

Total grocery bill: $350.00 (food for the meals only)

Three loads of dish washing during  cooking day…

It was a great experience and something I’d do again, but I would want an extra freezer.  I was able to fit it all in my current fridge freezer, but I had to take everything out and re-organize about three times to make it fit.  I will probably do twice a month cooking next month and see if it does not tax the freezer as much.

During the process, I kept wondering if it was worth it, and there were times I was tired during the cooking day, but having a freezer full of meals feels really good.  Yes, it was worth the effort.

Household Notebook

A friend of mine made me a custom home notebook for Christmas.  I love it and have been adding, adjusting, etc. to make it work for me.  She did an incredible job, and I want you to take a look:

The cover.

The inside cover with her homemade card, ‘to do’ sheets. The index tabs say: dates, contacts, addresses, notes, menus, misc.

She even put stamps in the stamp holder for me!

In it, I have also placed my lessons from thehomemakersmentor.com, the chore sheet of the week from motivatedmoms.com, and campsite maps.
