As a part of the deep clean of the bedroom, I took the opportunity to purge seven (plus) things:

-A stack of magazines I kept planning on collecting recipes and articles from, but never for around to it.

-2 decorative pillows that have lost their shape

-2 books (One will go to the MOPS library)

-2 framed prints I no longer want

-My 2 MOPS handbags

-Give back a Harry Potter Book I forgot I had

-a scarf

Round two: I could not resist going over my clothes again and shoes.  I got rid of:

-3 pairs of shoes (1 pair to sell)

-2 pairs of Pajamas

-1 skirt

-6 tops

-3 pairs of pants

-1 poncho (CAbi; I will sell)

-2 sweaters (They are Cabi; I want to sell them.)

I signed up for thehomemakersmentor.com, a printable notebook that has homemaking tasks.  The first lesson was a deep clean of the bedroom.  I just completed it.  This included scrubbing down the window sills and baseboards (that I could reach).  Can I just say ‘ew’?!

Anyway, the bedroom is sparkling clean.  DH loves that it smells like a hospital room.

Tropical Aloha

Maui January 2008

I spent a week on Maui, this time without kids!  DH and I decided this year to divide an conquer so we could each have a week of solid rest and reflection.  DH went to Maui in December and I went last week.  I stayed with my aunt, uncle, mother, and cousin in a condo.  Here is the view from our lanai.  This was taken about 6:30am, and that is the moon!  This is Napili Bay…

We spent a morning in the Iao Valley.  Here is the Iao Needle.  I am on the left, my mom in the middle, and my aunt on the right.

This area has a Heritage Garden, with gardens honoring the different cultures that  settled there.  This is from the Japanese garden.  I love this water plant.

The Heritage Garden had a banyan tree that we had fun exploring.

This was the hut in the unmarked garden, but I assume it was for the ‘South Pacific.’  The first picture is the roof, and the second is a closeup.

We attended a botanical garden.  How do I pick which photos to share?  There are so many gorgeous plants and flowers!

I spent one night with my friends, Linda and David (Linny).  This is the view from their timeshare.  Yeah, I feel bad for them too…

Linda and C4

We had lunch at ‘The Flatbread Company’ in Paia, and drove through upcountry and west Maui.

The restaurant gave the kids dough to play with.  Great idea! (Check out C3’s braids!)

My mom, aunt, cousin, and I drove to Hana and spent the night.  Here are just a few shots from the many I took.  Photos just do not do this drive justice.  You have to go to really appreciate it.

I had dinner with my Brother in law, Paul, and his girlfriend, Shannon.  They live in Kihei.  It was great to catch up with them.

We left 80 degrees and came home to snow.  It was a bit surreal.  I am now getting back into routine.

ALOHA!

I will be offline for a week…

Homeschool Highlights

We have had some nice snow recently.  School was delayed two hours, so my niece, KK, was able to come and visit for a couple of days in the morning.  Here they are playing "hot potato"

Fun photo of the boys in jammies with their guitars.

For school, one of the read alouds we are reading is "Milly Molly Mandy".  We read one chapter at a time.  We read a story about MMM’s teacher staying at her house while her home was being fixed.  The teacher made paper dolls.  ‘A’ and ‘R’ asked if we could make some.  I said, "um, sure…" and proceeded to look for directions on how to make these.

Here they are.  For a first time effort, I think they turned out OK.  The boys wanted to hang them from the ceiling so we could always see them.

Cinderella Saturday

DH ran across this tip and liked it.  We might implement this at some point.  Maybe once a month?

Tell your kids you are going to have a "Cinderella Saturday".

You all commit to cleaning or doing some sort of house or yard project during the day.  Then, you all get dressed up and go out to a nice, very special, dinner or go see a movie.

It seems like a fun way to shake up the monotony of duty.

Homeschool Highlights

Today, for math, we talked about how ancient people used body parts to measure items.  I measured the boys’ handspan, footprint, and pace (toe to toe a step ahead).  We measured the bedroom, door width, and window width, using these elements.  It was a bit of a challenge explaining to the boys why something was 15 handspans for ‘A’  and 18 handspans for ‘R’.  ‘A’ thought that he should have the higher number, bcause a higher number is bigger.  He had a hard time understanding that we needed more of ‘R’s handspans because his handspan is smaller.

Also, measuring a ‘pace’ was hard because they wanted to either take a huge step or something tiny.  A regular step just was not going to happen!

For science, we read, "A Year at Maple Hill Farm", and learned about seasons and how animals respond to the changing of the seasons.

We continue to read Bible stories about Jesus’ miracles and teachings.

I will add more later…

Kathy hosted our group today.  The theme was "plants".  We read a book called "Oh, Say can you Seed?" which talked all about the different parts of a seed and plant.

"R", "A", and "O"

With the activity, the kids glued their first initial and placed beans on them.  Here are the two AJ’s!

Another activity had the kids looking at the parts of a bean through a magnifying glass:

The last activity had the kids "planting" their own beans into a canning jar and wet paper towels.  They should sprout and grow their own bean plants!

DH received a call from Tim Carson of Vocal Artistry, and was asked to lead worship for a group of worship leaders at a conference in Redmond (Overlake Christian).  The boys and I went to hear him sing with our friends, Lisa and Steve.  The pictures are terrible, but there were about 170 worship leaders attending.  DH is the one in the gray sweatshirt and guitar.

They did great!  It was incredible to hear a whole room of people whose spiritual gifts are of music and worship.  Very powerful.
