Mochi Making Party

Our friends, the Pagaragan family, have a tradition every New Year to make a big batch of mochi, then freeze and eat through the year.  They invited friends over to share in the festivities.  They have a mochi maker.  It steams the rice, then pounds and pummels it into a rice paste. This is waaaaayyyy easier than the traditional method.

Our family love mochi and were thrilled to be invited to actually make some. We were surprised to discover that we were going to eat it with some savory options.  We had only had it as a sweet dessert, so this was a new experience for us.
One of the ways was serving it within a soup.  Here, you can see the mochi being boiled, like a dumpling, then will be added to the broth based soup next to it.

I had not planned on making this, but it was the first thought in my mind upon awakening on Christmas Eve morning.  It is a Christmas Tree bread that David’s mom always makes for Christmas.  The recipe makes two trees and was perfect for our morning meal, and subsequent snacking…

Dado, Paul, Shannon, and I went for a long walk along the Miner’s Ravine trail.  We walked about four miles!  Here is a spot along the trail that shows a grinding rock where the native american’s would grind the acorns to flour…

We spent the next few days enjoying each other’s company, and we all saw The Hobbit it 3D!  It was a wonderful, relaxing time together…

I hosted a party for our homeschool group.  DH took the boys out to dinner and a movie, and we had a fun evening of fun, laughs, and cookies!

$10 dice game gift exchange.  Everyone brought a gift and took turns rolling the dice.  We had to do whatever the card said based on the number rolled.  After a few rounds, whatever gift you ended up with was yours.  The popular one that garnered the most attention was an insulated casserole carrier…

The cookies!  We all took home a bunch…

Art class, where we picked up his friends, ‘J’ and ‘S’.  Lunch at Whole Foods, then some play time at home….we then went to ring the Salvation Army bells.  It was short lived, though, because I was wrong about our time, and had missed it.  Our replacements came within 10 minutes.  They still had a fun few minutes though.

I was hosting a party that night, so DH took the boys to see the movie ‘Frozen’, then out to dinner.  They came back later that evening and had a slumber party, not going to bed until 2:30am!  They played together all day the next day.  ‘A’ said this was one of his best birthdays ever…

Amazing Sunset

We get the most incredible sunsets here.  These pictures do not do it  justice…

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised.

Every year, our homeschool group sings carols at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.  Our family has not had the opportunity until this year to participate.  What a blessing for all involved.

The floors of the hospital open to the lobby.  The patients stand at the railings and hear us sing without having to leave their floor.  As we were singing, ‘Oh, Holy Night’, a grandmother with her granddaughter on the almost top floor, began crying and wiping her eyes.  I became emotional witnessing that, and could not sing the rest of the song.

Afterward, a group of us headed toward the cafeteria.  My friend, Marisa, got a call from her husband saying he was ten minutes away with enough lunch to feed 25 people.  There was a mix up for a luncheon and the receptionist double booked lunches.  He asked marisa if our group would like the lunch.  We met him at a nearby sculpture park and enjoyed a terrific Boudin lunch!IMG_5399 IMG_5401 IMG_5404

Our homeschool group hosted two tables to the annual Women’s Christmas Breakfast.  The group, FFH (Far From Home) gave a beautiful concert.  It was a lovely morning!
