We have known Jeff and Sheila as long as hubby and I have known each other.  David and I met at their wedding!  They decided to come down and spend time with us.  What a special time together.

One of the days was spent in Napa.  We dropped the boys off with Eric and Crystal and headed for a day of  Domaine Carneros, Frank Family, then a picnic lunch (that I had packed) at Benessere.

While David worked, the boys and I took Jeff and Sheila to old Sacramento for a little tour.

They introduced us to the card game, ‘Wizards’, and we spent our last night together playing it.  Looking forward to reconnecting in the summer.

Our precious little ‘Z’ is going to be dedicated this weekend. May God bless you, sweet girl.  May you grow up knowing the love of the Lord and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. May you be blessed with joy, peace, and His love all the days of your life.

Tube Party

BHN hosted a tube party.  It was a warm day, and the snow was a bit soupy, but we all had a great time regardless.  ‘A’ had an injured big toe (doc calls it ‘turf toe’) and stay home.  So, it was just ‘R’ and I!

Singing in the Rain

IMG_6076  IMG_6078

A beautiful weekend for a women’s retreat…. with Bev Bradley of Family Ministries.  The theme was “The Show Must Not Go On”.  The focus was to let go of “the show” and be real.

This year, we had a huge number of mothers and daughters together.  This picture is most of the moms and daughters lined up.

My journal notes…
IMG_6031
2 Corinthians 3:16 “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”

God is done being separate from us.  The veil has been torn.

Take time in prayer to not say anything.  Just receive His love.

He is glorified when He reveals His love and we receive it.

Reveal the “shows” that are still in my life.

Why do we put on a “show”? To be loved, accepted, and safe.  We were designed to be loved, accepted and safe by our Creator.  We just don’t know it, so we try to get it from others.

Pray for help to believe Him more.

We remove our masks when we find security in the Lord.

We will be in heaven a long time before we understand God’s depth of love.- We will still be growing in heaven.

Proverbs 29:25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

God’s first children, Adam and Eve, walked daily with God, yet they still failed.  If they failed, why do we think our children wouldn’t/shouldn’t?    Take the pressure of their actions off of you.  Take them to the cross, introduce them to Jesus, but leave their decisions between them and Jesus.

2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

What is natural for us is religion.  Trying to appease.  Trying to be something.  Trying to do right.

To do (works) vs. To be (intimacy with God)

Zephaniah 3:17  “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

May we never get to the point where we think we know who we are dealing with.

The hardest thing for a parent is that their child turns away from Jesus.  God experiences this everyday, yet He still relentlessly pursues us.

Teach on character, not behavior. (I have more notes, but will stop for now…)

A gorgeous day resulted in a gorgeous hike!

Tahoe 2014

David and my cousin, Terry, are business partners.  They started a tradition where they have a retreat in January to look over their company goals for the upcoming year.  This year, we had the retreat in the Tahoe area.  We stayed at the Old Greenwood Villas again, an amazing property.

Dinner our first night was at a place called Burger Me!  It’s been ranked as one of the Top 10 Burgers on ‘Diners, Drive In, and Dives’, with Guy Fieri, and won Best Burger -Esquire’s Best Food Moments of  2012.  We all enjoyed our meals, although I suffered the rest of the night for eating too late before bedtime.  We all agreed it was good, but I think places like this have a tough go of it because expectations are so high.

My cousin, T!

We spent a full day in Virginia City.  I had taken the boys here a few years ago, and wanted to show David and Terry.  I was about 90 minutes from Truckee.

The spiral staircase of the Washoe Club.  An old property that once housed the ‘Millionaire’s Club’, a club limited to 200 members, and included Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Edison, and Mark Twain.

The Washoe Club is also popular for ghost hunters and has been on TV more than once.

We took a tour of a mine that I took the boys on a few years ago.  We had the same guide, and we were (again), the only people on the tour.  Midweek, midwinter….

The Delta Saloon.  A gambling establishment that was full of cigarette smoke.  We beelined to take a photo of the “Suicide Table”, then headed back out.

“So called because three previous Owners are reported to have committed Suicide because of heavy Losses over this Table. Originally a Faro Bank Table brought to Virginia City in the early 1860’s. The Owner, supposed to be one “Black Jake”, Lost $70,000 in one Evening and shot himself.”
The second owner, whose name is lost in history, ran the Table for one nights play. He was unable to pay off his losses. One report has it that he committed suicide and another report has it that he was saved the trouble.
The table was then stored for some years because no one would Deal on it. It was finally converted into a ’21’ Table sometime in the late ’90s’ and its black reputation seemed to have been forgotten, until one stormy night.
A miner, who had been cleaned out in some other gambling house stumbled in half drunk. As the story goes, he gambled a gold ring against a five dollar gold piece, and won. He played all night Long… and by morning had one over $86,000 in cash, a team of horses and an interest in a gold mine. Everything the owner of table had in the world. That caused the third suicide.
Many famous men have gambled for high stakes, leaning on the green cloth, watching the turn of a card. Fortunes have been won and lost on it.”

Our Wednesday was spent playing card games, video games, and reading.  It was raining hard, and after a terrific dinner at Mikuni Sushi at North Star, we went to bed listening to rain pet the windows.  What a wonderful surprise to wake up to this!!

We were invited to a Kings basketball game with our friends, Glenn and Deana.  They did not tell us where we were seated.  Wow!  We were on the floor, just behind the opposing team!

The Kings lost, but it was an incredible game. a real nail biter….

Here is an article to bring you up to speed on our current drought situation.  This article references a lake that is located close to us.

Article

My friend, Eun, and I, took our kids to visit a part of Folsom Lake that is located on the other side from ours.  There used to be town called Mormon Island is now completely submerged under the lake.  Well, at least until recently.  Ruins from the town are now accessible due to the drought.

Mormon Island is on Wikipedia.  Check it out.

We are actually walking on the lake bed.  The lake is at 17%.  The white items on the right are the floating docks where boats are stored.  The boats have been either placed up above, or removed entirely.
IMG_5849

The kids came across this item.  We aren’t sure, but they want to believe that it is the part of an airplane wing….
IMG_5851

One of the ruins of Mormon Island.  As people walk around, they discovered old tools, broken ceramics and pottery, etc.  They placed these items on top of the walls.
IMG_5858

This is actually one of the favorite things I saw.  It was a winding road that led into town.  You can see the tree stumps that lined each side, equidistant to each other.  I can imagine the lovely tree lined road it once was…

Maui January 2014

A last minute decision to go to Maui resulted in a little change in our typical itinerary.  We could not get into either place we typically stay in and had to venture out to a new place.  Ended up staying at a condo at the Kapalua Bay Villas.  The condo itself was pretty dated on many levels, but the location, size, and view were amazing.  Main living was downstairs with a sofa bed, dining table and chairs for four, a kitchen, and shower bathroom.  The upstairs had an incredible master bedroom, laundry closet, small lanai, and large bathroom.  It also had this incredible view from our bed….

After dinner the first night, we cam across this large praying mantis.  ‘R’ asked it they bite, and I said ‘no’, and picked him up.  After placing him/her back down, ‘R’ picked it up, and as I was getting ready to take a picture, it opened its mouth and BIT ‘R’!  It did not hurt much, and we had a good laugh over it.  I felt bad, though, that I gave wrong information.

This was the lovely view I got to enjoy all by myself on an early morning run…

After church, we met up with our snowbird friends, Jeff and MC.  They spend Jan-Mar at the property we typically stay at (Napili Shores) and go to the same church we go to when we are there (Kumulani Chapel).  We became friends with them when the boys were little ones.  But, we have not seen them for about six or seven years because our Maui travel has not been over the months they are there.  It was wonderful to get caught up with them and have them see how the kids have grown.
IMG_5628

After breakfast, while the adults sat and talked, ‘A’ and ‘R’ went to play on the (Napili) beach.  When we met up with them, we discovered they were making a treasure map, and this spot was ‘x’ marks the spot.  They buried a piece of coral as the treasure…

Our focus for this trip was relaxation, restoration, and refueling.  It was a hard year for us in 2013 and we wanted to begin 2014 in a good way.  We did not do hardly anything other than read, watch movies, or listen to podcasts in the morning, then snorkel, swim, or bodysurf in the afternoon.
However, one very special thing we did do was to take the boys to see The Beach Boys in concert!  They were celebrating their 50 year anniversary.  How could we not miss this! The group had two of the original members, and everyone else has been with them for many years.  They also had a special guest star of John Stamos (Uncle Jesse from ‘Full House’) who played with them the whole concert, and the last song prior to the encore, they had Willie Nelson’s son do a guitar solo…it was an amazing, bucket-list, night…

This is a picture of the church we attend while on Maui.  It’s actually a two walled shed (they call it “The Barn”), and is located on the Kapalua golf course.  The first week we were here, this area was very full, with a big golf tournament of champions.  But, the next week was nice and quiet. IMG_5753 IMG_5793

This is not the largest snail I have seen on the island, but its still pretty big…IMG_5798
We bought ‘A’ a Go Pro camera for Christmas.  He enjoyed taking underwater video and other action shots.  I wrote this on his knee.  He was so tickled by it, he asked that I take a picture…
IMG_5799
We have another set of friends that live on the island full time.  They are the parents of my brother in laws girlfriend.  We try to see them every time we are over.  This time we met at Kobe Steakhouse for a fun night out!

After dinner, we were in the parking lot that had a breadfruit tree.  There was a breadfruit on the ground and the boys wanted to open it.  They tried everything.  Finally, Cowboy stepped in and used a sign as an ‘axe’ to chop it open.
