Lesson 12/12/06

We doubled our lesson today.  We also had our little buddy, ‘O’, with us.

Fingerplay
"What do you know?"

Bible Story
1 Kings 11:1-2, 9-12, 16:60, 17:1-4
Children’s Bible: Solomon worshipped an idol and the story of Elijah

Active Exploration
We talked about the concept of pairs- things that come in two.
I had the boys follow a pair of actions:
1. step left and right
2. jump forward and backward
3. Reach high and low, etc…

Letter Activity
We reviewed the letters A-L.  Both boys were able to correctly identify all the letters.

Bible Activity
I had a puppet that represented ‘Solomon’.  I was Solomon’s "wives".  I would tempt Solomong away from his God and over to my God.  The boys shouted to Solomon, "No! No! Don’t do it Solomon!"

Music
‘Solomon’, ‘Listen to Wisdom’, ‘Elijah’

Math Activity
I mixed three food items together (wheat thins, goldfish, and pretzels).  The boys pretended to be the ravens that fed Elijah and had to separate the food items into three individual containers.  It took everything they had to not eat until the lesson was complete!

I also used the Goldfish to show how to count by 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s…

Letter Activity
I pulled out the letter ‘M’ flashcard and the boys studied it.

Lesson 12/11/06

Fingerplay
"What do you know?

Bible Story
1 Kings 9:1-7
Children’s Bible:  The people give thanks at the temple.

Devotional Activity
We reviewed the devotions from I-L:
Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
John 14:6- Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life…"
Psalm 34:13- Keep your tongue from evil
Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Letter Activity
Hide and Seek Review
‘R’ was cranky and did not want to try, hence the sad face.  I gave a happy face to ‘A’ for his attitude and effort.

Math Activity
We went to primarygames.com and played "Count the Fish", "Space Station", and "Ant Parade"

Spanish
While playing the math games, I quizzed them on colors, and also talked about left=izquierda, and right=derecha

Music
Listen and sang to ‘Solomon’ and ‘The Temple’

I feel like it has been a long time since we have done our regualr homeschool routine.  I noticed that the last time I posted the lesson, it was December 5th.  Well, here is what we have done since then…

12/6/06 Field trip to the Children’s Museum

12/7/06 MOPS day-the boys went to their own class

12/8/06 Friday morning Bible Study-the boys went to their own class

12/9-12/10 Weekend

We had a playdate this morning with a neighbor.  I did not know her and this was a good opportunity to.  She has a four year old boy and two two year ole twin girls.  They played for an hour and shared lunch with us.

After that, I took the boys to Factoria Mall.  They had their pictures taken with Santa.  (It turned out sooooo cute!).  Then, we met up with some friends and went to the Children's Museum.  There are about six interactive exhibits that the boys enjoyed.  Half of the museum is devoted to water and all these different contraptions that create music with water and other fun “let's see what happens if we push this?”…

There is a cab of a semi-truck that the kids can sit in and pretend to drive.  For some reason, both of my boys are too afraid to go in it.  I think it's because it is too dark.

They both like to climb up the treehouse and look down on the moms waiting below.

I think that both 'A' and 'R's favorite exhibit is the music room.  Here, they can play with unique instruments and make alot of noise.

After a couple of hours, we all went to Red Robin for dinner (3 moms and six kids…).  Mervyn's also had a going out of business sale, and I was able to buy four big towels and four hand towels for $32.00!

Lesson 12/5/06

Fingerplay

“What do you know?”

Bible Story

1 Kings 9:1-7

Children's Bible: Solomon praises God with his hands held high

Dramatic Play

We talked about celebrations and how Israel celebrated when God's temple was finished.  They sang and dances and played music.

We pulled out some pots and wooden spoons and walked around the house playing our “drums”.  Every few seconds, I would stop and say:

“Thank you God for __________”, then one of the boys would respond with something they were thankful for.  Here are a few of their items:

  • Minus and Tigger (stuffed animals)

  • our house

  • walkie-talkies

  • drawers

Here is a picture of the boys marching around.  There was a sun-ray coming through the window, and I love the effect it had on this picture!  My boys are a pair of angels 🙂

Letter Activity

This is review week.  I had 'A' practice writing upper and lower case 'A' and 'B'.

Bible Activity

We made a list of things we were thankful for:

  • our toys

  • pets

  • trees

  • nice, sunny days to play outside

  • being home

  • our family

  • our church

  • having food everyday

  • clothing

We then prayed with our arm raised up in thanks for all of these things.

Music

“Solomon”, and “The Temple”

Winter Beauty

Last week, we had snow.  Not a lot, but enough to make everything look pretty.  What amazed me, though, was the ice encased trees.  I have never seen anything like this before.  The maples and dogwoods were stunning to see.  I wish my pictures could do it justice, but you know how hard it is to capture God’s beauty of nature on film…

Lesson 11/30/06

Due to snow, my niece, K, was with us and participated.  Since we were housebound, we doubled our lesson today.

Fingerplay

“What do you Know?”

Bible Story

1 Kings 3:23-28; 4:29; 5:3-5; 6:11-13

Children's Bible:  The story of Solomon and the two mothers

The story where Solomon built a temple to house God's ark

Math Activity

I placed five different pairs of shoes on the floor all in different sizes.  I had the boys “pair” them and them line them up in order from smallest to largest.  The kids then had to try on the shoes and say whether they were too small, too large, or just right.  I then had them line them up from lightest to darkest.

Letter Activity

This is the beginning of review week.  I quizzed 'R' on the letters we have done so far (A-L) and he was able to get them all (uppercase).  I quizzed “A” on upper and lower and he got them all.

Art Activity

I gave the boys marshmallows and toothpicks to build a “temple”.  They much preferred eating them over building.

Bible Activity

I gave each child a piece of paper.  They are to follow my directions one at a time.

Draw a cloud at the top of the page. (Represents Solomon's dream)

Draw a smiley face in the middle of the page (Represents Solomon)

Draw a rectangle at the bottom of the page (Represents the temple he built)

I had the kids act out the following:

-swing ax to cut down a tree

-saw wood

-pound nails

-stir gold in a pot over fire

-pick up heavy bricks

etc.

This activity represented the hard work the people did to build the temple.

Music

Listened and sang to “Solomon”, “The Temple”, “Listen to Wisdom”

We lovingly have dubbed my aunt the "Martha Stewart of Washington State".  She went to a professional chef’s school just for the knowledge and blessing of sharing good food with her family and friends.  Everything she does is done is good taste, whether it’s decorating or dining.

This is one of the cookies she always makes at Christmas time.  We all drool when she brings these out.

Chocolate Peanut Balls

1c. crunch peanut butter

1c. powdered sugar

1c. chopped dates

2T. butter

1pkg. chocolate chips

1/2square unsweetened chocolate

Mix the first 5 ingredients and roll into balls.

Melt chocolate and dip balls.  Place on was paper and keep refrigerated.

YUM!
