“Baby in the Basket”; Introduced the letter “F”

Bible Story

Bible: Exodus 1:22, 2:1-4

Children’s Bible: Baby Moses went into the river in a basket

Art Activity

“A” cut strips of green paper for grass.  I assisted “R” in cutting his strips.  They glued the “grass” onto the “water”, then placed baby Moses in the water as well.

“A” and “R” made birthday cards for their grandfather.  “A” was able to write, “To Dado”

“Love A(insert name here) (‘Dado’ is grandpa’s nickname, a play on ‘abuelito’)

Letter Activity

I had “A” practice writing his name.  He can do the letters, but has not grasped the concept of placing the letters in a row, next to each other.

I drew the letter “F” in sidewalk chalk and the boys had fun playing on it and saying the letter ‘F’ and making the phonic sound.

Bible Activity

The boys acted out the Bible story.  They pretended to weave a basket, place their baby in the basket, place the baby in the river, pray to God to protect their baby.

I asked if they thought DH and I prayed to God to protect them.  They both said, “yes”.

Active Exploration

I asked the boys if they have any relatives that live far away.  “A” immediately said: “Uncle P!”.  When I asked him where he lived, “A” answered, “Hawaii”.  We then talked about where all the grandparents live (Seattle, Olympia, Everett, Sagle).

We talked about loved ones who have passed away.  We talked about ” Grandma G”, and looked at her picture.  I told them that she liked to make pancakes and homemade jam, was a terrific dancer, and played games.  She also had a great sense of humor.

Focus: The importance of maintaining memories of loved ones.

Letter Activity

We reviewed the flashcards for ‘E’.  Then, the boys were to write out ‘E’ on their paper.

Bible Activity

I showed the boys the act of a blessing by blessing them.  They kneeled before me, I placed my hands on their heads, and asked for God to bless their lives, thoughts, works, and deeds.  ‘R’ giggled through the whole blessing!

We walked our trail from our home to church.  The boys walked about 2/3 of the way before surrendering to the stroller.  I’d say they walked almost a mile.  DH picked us up, due to flat tires on the stroller.

HS Schedule

I have been struggling with when to begin the Sonlight PreK.  Do I begin it when “R” is just 3, and “A” is 4?  Or do I begin it when “R” is 4, and “A” is 5.  Since I plan on incorporating CM with Sonlight, here is my current plan…

Current: Continue with Little Hands to Heaven.  This should be completed around “R”'s  3rd birthday in March.  This curriculum is solid biblical foundation, with reading from the Bible and children's Bible, character training, some art, some math (counting), letter recognition and sound.

In addition: Physical Activity (martial arts 2x a week for “A”), nature study/walk, read alouds from CM book list,  composer study (we play Mozart and Beethoven's more common pieces), artist study (“A” loves to tell people that Vincent Van Gogh cut off his ear.), lifeskills/cooking, Spanish, field trip.

Schedule

Monday: LHTH, Nature Walk, Read Aloud, Spanish

Tuesday: LHTH, Martial Arts, Read Aloud, Spanish, Cooking/Life skill

Wednesday: LHTH, (Composer Study, Read Aloud, Spanish), OR Field Trip

Thursday: LHTH, Martial Arts, Read Aloud, Spanish

Friday:  LHTH, Artist Study, Read Aloud, Spanish

March 2007: We will follow Ambleside Online- year 0,  for a year, until “R” turns 4.

Teach you Child to Read in 100 Lessons/ The American Schoolhouse Reader

March 2008:  Begin Sonlight preK, when “R” is 4, and “A” is 5.5.

Of course, this is bound to change, but I want to get it in writing to keep my thoughts organized.  I know God will guide to where He wants us to be.

“Joseph’s Brothers”/ Introduced the letter “E”

Bible Story

Genesis 41:14-32

Read from my Bible and the children’s the story where Joseph interprets the Pharoah’s dream.

Dramatic Play

One boy sat with his back to the other.  They had an “animal” crawl up the back and had to guess what it was.

Here is “R” having a “cheetah” walk up “A’s” back:

Letter Activity

We looked at the flashcard with the letter “E”, studied it, and repeated the sound.

Bible/Math Activity

The boys took six pillow pictures and glued them onto the Number Six page, for their counting book.

Music

“What do you know?”

Bible Story

Genesis 39:20-22

We read the story about Joseph in jail and how God continued to take care of him there.

Dramatic Play

Each child had a stuffed animal (our friend ‘O’, age 2, participated as well.)  I would make a statement, such as: “I like to eat pizza”, and the boys would have their animals nod or shake their heads.  After I did my statements, “A” made up some for us to do.

Focus: Joseph always answered honestly.

Letter Activity

We reviewed the flashcards A-B-C-D.  I had each boys trace the letters with their fingers.  I then got out a large dry erase board.  The two younger boys drew whatever and watched me work with ‘A’.  ‘A’ practiced writing A-B-C and D on the dry erase board.

Bible Activity

I would ask the kids to do something, and they would respond. ‘yes, teacher’.  After I had them do a few simple things, I asked them, “Do you work hard even when you don’t want to?” (They all said ‘yes’). “Do you listen to what God says in the Bible, or do you do whatever you want to do? (‘A’ answered, he wanted to do what God wants him to do.)

Focus: Joseph worked hard even in prison, and God took care of him.

I have decided to follow the homeschoolmom.com menu for the week.  She has all the recipes posted here

Blackberry Hunters

Today was one of those days where the wind whispered, “you better pick those blackberries you have been talking about; they won't last much longer…”

So, we went blackberry picking, (or what “A” prefers to call, “Blackerry Hunt”)

Here are the “fruits” of our labor…

For the record, the boys contributed, collectively, EIGHT berries.  You can guess where the rest went…
