Happy September!  I am still feeling a little low, but we were able to get a lesson in.

“What do you know?”

Bible Story

Genesis 39:1-5

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Joseph works in Egypt.

Active Exploration

The boys got their stuffed animals and I pretended to give the animals “commands” to give to the boys, like “raise us over your heads”, “take us to the front door”, etc.

The idea was to see how Joseph was put in charge of telling others what to do.

Letter Activity

I had each boy choose a letter between A-D.  “A” chose ‘A’, and “R” chose ‘D’.  They painted thin glue on their letter and sprinkled mint flakes over it.

Bible Activity

We talked about being alone (like when Joseph was alone in the cistern, and then when he was taken far away from his family and was sent as a slave to Egypt.).  I asked for circumstances when the boys were ever alone.  “A” said, “When we are in timeout and when we are at the grocery store and you go to get something and leave us at the cart.”

I asked, “how would you feel if you had to leave your family and live somewhere else.”  “A” answered, “sad”.  “R” answered, “happy” (Thanks, “R”! LOL!)

We then talked about how God is always with us, and how we are never really alone.  We prayed and gave thanks to God for always being there and to help us remember that He is always there.

P.E.

Played at the park, Centennial Fields.  It is soooo windy today, but warm.

Read Aloud

Stone Soup

Begin Beatrix Potter series

Extra:

Here is a picture from Wednesday, when we made “Stone Soup” for dinner.  I went a little crazy with the barley, so it was more like “Stone Sludge”, but the flavor was good, and the kids enjoyed making it in accordance to the book.

No school today…

I have a cold and feel cruddy.

I’ve been tagged!

I don't pass these on, so if anyone is interested in tagging themselves, go for it!!  Sorry, can't do just one on most…

“What do you know?”

Bible Story

“C”, age 13, read Genesis 37:28-37

“R”, age 11, read The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes-the story where Joseph is sold by his brothers

Math Activity

The kids rubbed a crayon on paper over coins.  The older kids quizzed the younger ones on what each coin was.  These are new for both boys, and they did OK with short term memorization.

Letter Activity

The boys had to circle the letter with the chosen color.  “A” was able to complete it, but “R” was very distracted.  This was a review of the letters so far.

Math Activity

The boys made the 'number 5' page.  The older kids drew the purses/wallets, then the younger two colored them in.

Music

“Joseph's Dream”

Today, we had two friends visit in the morning, ages 2 years, and, 6 months.  They participated in our morning school activities.  “O” was so proud to show his mom what he made!

Joseph’s Dream

We also played Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, and Symphony No. 5

Read Aloud

Daddy got this honor today.  They read, Ferdinand, Corduroy, and Backyard Circus.  I think a Dr. Seuss was thrown in there too!

Social

We had the two boys in the morning, then I took care of my friend’s three kids in the afternoon.  She is sick with strep, so her two girls, ages 7 and 3, and boy, age 5, joined us.  We went to the car wash, the grocery store, the park, and played at home while I made their mom (and them….and us…) dinner.

Baked Spaghetti

1lb. ground beef

1pkg. dried spaghetti

1pkg. shredded Mozzarella (2c.)

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 jar spaghetti sauce

Cook ground beef and drain.  Add sauce to beef.  Boil spaghetti noodles until cooked and drain.

In a casserole dish, add 1/3 noodles. Add 1/3 mushroon soup.    Add 1/3 sauce.  Add 1/3 cheese.  Layer remainder of ingredients.  Bake at 350degrees for 20 minutes.  Lightly cover with aluminum foil to keep cheese from burning.

“What do you know?” This is a review of the four letters we have learned in these past five units.

Bible Story

Genesis 37:3-4

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Joseph gets a multi-colored coat from his dad, Jacob

Art Activity

The boys took Q-tips and dipped them in water colored with food coloring.  They then made “Joseph’s coat “.

Letter Activity

We reviewed the letters A-B-C-D with the flashcards.  I quizzed both boys, although “A” knows pretty much the whole alphabet.  “R” knows A and B, consistently, and  sometimes gets C and D.  I also had the boys pretend that they were the teacher.  They took turns quizzing each other.

Bible Activity

The kids acted out the story we read today.  They took turns being “Joseph”, pretending to open a present, acting surprised and trying on a coat, and saying “thank you so much Dad!”

We then talked about the special gifts the boys have received, and also the concept of jealousy and what God’s thoughts are on this.

Music

Played and sang, “Joseph’s Dream”

Saturday, we went to Cle Elum to attend a “Kick the Can” party at our friend's cabin.  This is an annual event; one that we look forward to attending every year.

Ironically, we never got around to playing kick the can!  The adults had alot of good conversation, and the kids kept themselves entertained, nonstop!

Here are some highlights of the day:

The boys playing in the river

“M” with a big, fat caterpillar like the one one “A Bugs Life”

“R”, with our friend “J”

On the way home, we had to drive in the dark down long country roads.  Dh says, “I need to slow down, there are probably deer around.”  The second he said that, we noticed a slow moving figure on the road.  We ended up driving into about 10 cows going for an evening stroll!  They must have figured out how to open the gate!

Bible Story

Genesis 33:1-7

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Esau forgave Jacob

Devotional Activity

Read from My ABC Bible Verses

Philippians 2:14, “Do all things without complaining or disputing.”

“A” asked who the Holy Spirit was, so we talked about that and how He helps us know what is right and wrong.

We talked about having a thankful heart over a complaining heart.

I had the boys pretend to complain.  They enjoyed that.  I also had them tell me what they were thankful for.  They focused on material items (stuffed animals, blanket, etc.), I had to do a little prompting for people and abilities…

Letter Activity

I had them trace the letter 'D' on the flashcard.  Then, we fingerpainted the letter.  “R” is all assisted, “A” is all on his own, except for the two that look like solid “D”'s.

Bible Activity

The boys acted out the story I read to them today.  “A” was Esau and “R” was Jacob.  “R” pretended to ride a camel and pointed to A/Esau and said, “Look, there's Esau!  I wonder if he is still mad at me?”

He goes to A/Esau and says, “I am sorry, please forgive me.”

A/Esau says, “yes, I forgive you”, and hugs R/Jacob.

(Sorry family, but I did not take pictures for this one.  Needless to say, it was pretty precious.)

Music

Played and sang “The Blessings that will be”

Bible Story

Genesis 32:22-31

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Jacob wrestles with an angel

Letter Activity

I drew the letter ‘D’ on a piece of paper, and placed glue along it.  The boys put macaroni on the ‘D’. (‘R’ is still having a hard time with this letter as well.  He still says, “I don’t know when I ask him what it is.)

Bible Activity

The boys acted out the Bible story of Jacob wrestling with the angel.  “A” was Jacob, “R” was the angel/God.  Here is the picture of them wrestling, and the picture where God touches Jacobs hip/leg.  They had a fun time acting this out.  “R” kept saying, “stop Jacob, no more fighting.”, and “A” would reply, “no, I won’t stop until you give me a blessing.”

They then acted out the story with puppets.  Penguin is Jacob, and Owl is the angel/God.

Music

Played and sang, “The Blessing that will Be”
