House versus Home

I just read a nice blog from someone who found a home.  (Darnit, I can't remember whice blog it was.)  Anyway, she talked about how it was a home versus a house, and how the people who lived in it, filled it with love.  She could tell through the many little personal touches that makes up a home.

I began to look at our home and thought to myself, “if someone were to visit, would they see our house as a house, or a home?”

I believe that our interior is definitely a home.  We play music often, the walls are full of family pictures, a wall is devoted to the boy's homeschool activities, and I work hard to keep the house tidy and organized.  It is comfortable, and (I hope), welcoming to others.

The exterior, however, is another story.  I view our yard as the enemy (well, more specifically, I view the pine trees (with their needle bullets and pinecone bombs), moles, weeds, and our cats (who like to sit in our windowboxes, thus destroying the planted flowers), as the enemy.  I take no joy in tending to the yard and only do as much as needed to make sure that we don't look like we are neglecting our home, yet there is no “love” being shown to the general public driving or walking by.

I want the love I feel for our God and my family and friends to spill from the interior to the exterior.  So, I am challenging myself to do one thing a day to show love to this wonderful home that God has given us.

With that being said, I am headed to Waterville for the Lincoln Brewster/Mark Schultz concert!  My challenge will begin tomorrow! 🙂

Fingerplay

“One dusty camel”

Bible Story

Genesis 28:10-15, 29:16-20

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Jacob’s Ladder and meeting Rachel

Math Activity

I marked a starting line and made the goal of a stuffed animal (Mrs. Ladybug, playing the part of ‘Rachel’).  The boys had to hop to the goal.  Each landing was marked by a line.

We then compared the jumps using the words: shortest, longest, farther, closest.

Letter Activity

The boys had to pick out the “D’s”.  ‘R’ did well circling without my assistance.  He found 9/14.  ‘A’ did the whole lesson without any assistance, and found 13/14. (He actually found 2 I had missed when checking ‘R’s!)

Bible Activity

The boys drew a piece of Jacob’s Ladder (looks like the letter ‘H’) in boxes.  ‘A’ was able to make the ladders unassisted, and drew the number one without help.  I assisted with the remaining numbers.  I helped ‘R’ with all of his.

Music

Played and sang to “The Blessing that will Be”

We were blessed to enjoy the company of a 5 month old boy, and a 2 year old boy this morning.  They joined us in our homeschool activities.

“A” had a great time practicing being a good host, and they took turns knocking and ringing the doorbell, and inviting each other in, and introducing themselves.

“One Dusty Camel”

Bible Story

Read Genesis 27:15-24

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Jacob lied to his father by pretending to be his brother, Esau

Art Activity

I drew each boys names in dots and they had to connect the dots to create their name.  Then, they had to try to color over their names to hide their names.

Focus: Jacob tried to hide who he was, but it is better to be yourself.  God can always see through the disguise.

Letter Activity

I drew the letter “D” in sidewalk chalk.  The boys tiptoed along the “D”, then yelled “D” when they jumped off of it.  They had so much fun doing this!

Bible Activity

We acted out the story of Isaac and Jacob.  I was Isaac and the boys took turns being Jacob.  They first pretended to be Esau.  Then they were truthful and said they were Jacob.  We talked about which way was better and why.

Music

We played  ‘The Blessing That Will Be’.  I could not find the lyrics, so we just played it but did not sing.

Fingerplay

“One Dusty Camel”

We looked up pictures of camels.

Bible Story

Read Genesis 24:1-7, 61-67

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Isaac meets Rebekah

Active Exploration

We took turns shaking hands and introducing each other properly.  Then we asked polite questions to stimulate conversation, such as,

“What foods do you like?” The boys answered “macaroni and cheese, and pizza”

I said “seafood”, which sparked a conversation on what is seafood exactly.

“What do you like to play?” The boys answered, “Playing Superman and Batman, and cars”.  I said “tennis, and arts and crafts, and playing with my boys”.

We then took turns being the host and the guest and giving tours of our home.

Focus: Isaac and Rebekah needed to get to know each other.

Letter Activity

Reviewed the letters, “A, B, C”.  “A” knows all well.  “R” knows ‘A’, sometimes ‘B’, but can never say ‘C’ when asked.   I then introduced the flashcard for ‘D’.  “A” knows it, but ‘R’ does not.

Math Activity

The boys created page four of their counting book.  They glued four women (in honor of Sarah and Rebekah) on the page.  ‘A’ actually cut, pasted, and placed the items without any assistance!  I cut and glued for “R”; he placed.

Art

Played with sidewalk chalk outside.

OK, so I said we weren’t going to do anything until Monday, but we had some free time and managed to squeeze in a lesson…

Clippity Clippity

The focus this week was the letter “C”.  After one solid week of working on this letter, “R” still cannot say this letter by sight.  Sometimes, if I ask him if it’a  “C”, he will say yes, but it is not constant.  Not sure if this is something to be concerned about.  He is 2.5.  He can name some other letters by sight, but for some reason, this one is hard for him.

Bible Story

Read Genesis 22:1-13

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: God tested Abraham with his son, Isaac.

Active Exploration

We looked at baby pictures of both of the boys and discussed the different stages. (crawling, walking, baby talk, first foods, etc.)

We then talked about how Isaac was once a baby, then grew to be a “big boy”.

Letter Activity

Looked at the “C” flashcard and quizzed the boys on it.  Had them trace it with their fingers.

Bible Activity

We took their favorite stuffed animals and had the boys hug them and love them.  Then, we hugged the Bible  and asked how does God want us to love Him?

The focus was to love God above all.  And to love others to show of God’s love for us.

Music

Played and sang, “God Began a Nation”

P.E./Social

Family camp for the weekend.   The boys were immersed in play with kids of all ages (the teens adore them).  Some fun in the lake (Dad took them in a rowboat), “R” fell asleep during worship time in front of a bonfire…how perfect!

Mini School Break

We did not do any homeschool activities yesterday, due to multiple playdates, and “A's” half day camp.  Today, we went on a hike, “A” has day camp again, and we need to pack for Family Camp this weekend with our church.

So, it is an official mini school break until Monday…

Fingerplay

“Clippity Clippity”.  I just did the motionas and ‘A’ recited it by memory.

Bible Story

Read Genesis 18:1-10

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: Abraham is visited by three men from heaven

Dramatic Play

The boys re-enacted Abraham being visited by the three men (stuffed animals). We had a friend visiting who participated.  The washed the men’s feet, offered them water to drink, food to eat, and acted like good hosts.  The three men (stuffed animals) blessed them.

Letter Activity

The boys circled the letter ‘c’.  ‘A’ got 11 of 12 and ‘R’ got 7 of 12.

Math Activity

The boys had to draw a “tent” in each square. ‘A’ drew the tents unassisted, but I helped him write the number.  He did not pay attention and got the first box wrong.  Once I corrected him, he did the rest properly. ‘R’ needed heavy assistance with it all.

Music

Played and sang “God Began a Nation” while jumping on the bed (we did this three times!)

Other

‘A’ attended half day camp today.

Fingerplay

“Clippity Clippity”

Bible Story

Read Genesis 15:3-6

The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes

Focus: God’s promise to Abraham

Art Activity

The boys took a small piece of paper towel and blotted white paint on a black piece of paper to represent stars in the ngiht sky..  They then colored a piece of white paper and folded this, representing Abraham’s tent.

Letter Activity

I took sidewalk chalk and drew two ‘c’s.  I had the boys take toy cars and move the cars along the letter while saying ‘c’.

Bible Activity

We made a “tent” and the boys “dressed” up as Abraham.  They went into the tent and I turned off the lights.  I read to them Genesis 15:3-6 and we acted out Abraham talking to God.  The boys repeated what Abraham said and I had the boys come out of the tent and try to count all the “stars” in the night sky (a dark ceiling had to suffice.)  “A” said he could not count them because there were too many stars!

Music

Played and sang “God Began a Nation”

Other

“A” went to a half day camp today, and “R” went to a playdate for three hours with three other boys, ages 2, 6, and 6.
