Maui 2013: SNUBA!

I thought the last post was THE  last post for Maui 2013.  However, while DH and the boys were still on the island (I came home a few days earlier), they went Snuba diving and had pictures taken.

They LOVED it!  (For those unfamiliar with Snuba.  It’s similar to Scuba, except the air tanks are kept on the surface with the air hoses running down.)  The boys wore weight belts and went about 25 -30 feet deep.  They learned how to equalize the pressure in their ears.  It’s a win-win right now for the kids to experience what Scuba diving would be like, without the weight of the tank and the ability to go past one atmosphere.

We had these for dinner, with collard greens and corn on the cob.  ‘A’ was my assistant.

They make for a decent, simple family dinner.

For dessert, ‘A’ and I made this vegan chocolate pudding.  It had the perfect pudding texture.  Flavor was good, but very rich.

Beginning to include the kids more in meal planning and preparing…

Friday: Zucchini Pockets, Collard Greens, Corn on the Cob, Vegan Chocolate Pudding

Saturday: Garlic Parsley Pasta, Bread, Green Salad

Sunday: Ratatouille, Rice, Broccoli

Monday: Memorial Day BBQ

Tuesday: Eat out/Leftovers

FYI: Fish bite!  I was standing in the surf, not even hip deep, and a reef triggerfish (the humuhumunukunukuapua’a) came up and bit me!  He even drew blood.  If you see this guy, bite him back for me!

That evening, the Smiths invited us to their place for a fun evening of fajitas, margaritas, and music.  Scott rented two acoustic guitars so he and David could play.

Sad to leave the fair isle of Maui.  Until we meet again…

Every year on Maui, we spend an evening with our friends, Cowboy and Carol.  This year, we decided to visit the popular restaurant, Star Noodle.  As a fan of the show, ‘Top Chef’, I wanted to visit this place because the executive chef had placed third this last season.

I love that the restaurant is located back up the hill from Lahaina, instead of on Front St.  It made for easier parking, and just seemed a little more special to “go our of our way” to eat.

Near our Napili property is a little bay that typically has 4-8 sea turtles.  We snorkeled here a few times before the surf became too strong.

Maui 2013: The Smiths

Back in April, my Washington friend, Liann, and I were talking on the phone.  I mentioned that were were going to Maui.  We discovered that they would be there at the same time!  We decided to keep it a secret from our husbands and surprise them.  (I never thought we’d make it since the guys are good friends.  I figured they’d talk.)  The Smiths were going to spend two nights in a hotel, then transfer to a house that was rented with two other couples.  Liann set it up so that they would be at the same property we were.  We planned on having all of us snorkeling at the beach in front of our property and have the guys run unto each other in the water.

All went well, until Scott saw David’s Facebook post about being on Maui.  Then the guys started texting and were amazed that they were coincidentally staying at the same property. 🙂  We were so close!

DH and Eric took the boys for the day and Crystal and I went to Paia to spend the day.  We drove to Kihei to pick up her grandmother (also visiting the island).

Paia is full of neat boutiques and art galleries.  But, it is very casual and funky.  We had lunch at a wonderful vegetarian restaurant, Fresh Mint.

While we were shopping, Crystal received a text from some of her good friends who live in New York.  Through Facebook they found out she was on Maui and they were as well, attending a wedding!  We drove back to Kihei and crashed the pre-wedding beach party!

On the other side of the island, DH was spoiling the boys with funny shirts and hats (the hats has a detachable mustache that you can apply on your upper lip…)
IMG_2422 IMG_2424 IMG_2423
Driving home after a full day, Crystal and I stopped off at Leoda’s.  They were closed, but they let us buy what was left of their pies.  We bought a hand held berry pie, and a chocolate cream-macadamia nut pie.  Amazing…

…our favorite beach to body surf.  The next beach over is known for incredible snorkeling (Honolua Bay).  I took a great panoramic shot, but it will not upload…) Mokuleia Bay

We love staying at the Napili Shores as part of our vacation.  Low key, on a quieter part of the island.  They have a bunch of plumeria trees (my favorite flower).  ‘R’ brings me a few everyday to add to the bowl for a bouquet…
